Transmission hesitation?

I don't know if this is normal or not, and I hope I can explain things properly.

I just got a 2009 E91 328xi about two months ago. It has 32K miles on it. In the morning, after backing out of the driveway and shifting to Drive, when I step on the gas, the car doesn't engage gears right away. For several seconds the engine races slightly, RPM's go up to about 3K, then drop back to about 2K, and the car starts to move forward. As I continue to drive I don't notice the hesitation again.

Is this normal? Is there something wrong? Is it because the engine is still warming up? I haven't tried starting out in Sport mode to see if it happens there as well. Just seems weird, but it feels like the transmission is slipping.

I never had this experience with my X5 4.4i. Not sure what to think about it. What do you guys think?

Dave
