Interior makeover in Piano black trim. All black everything !

Not even had my car a week and I'm ripping out the interior trim to change the colour from matte silver to piano black gloss. Looks a whole lot better now as the original silver was not in great condition ( few scratches ). I painted the trim myself however I'm a trained spray painter and these parts are very tricky to polish after they are painted. Would recommend to anyone planing on doing this job to take the trim to a local Bodyshop unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Just 2 full coats then flattened and polished for glass like finish. IMA I don't like gloss vinyl it's nowhere near as good a finish as paint and vinyl tends to be a little dull and have an orange peal finish. Most people probably don't notice it but as I said I'm a trained painter and I see EVERYTHING and to be honest it's more a curse than a good thing lol !!!

Nice job...looks great. You are right, it is not easy to work with. It is easy to burn through the paint when sanding and buffing, but the results are well worth it.

Looks really good, makes me wish I had gone through with doing mine.
I was planning to paint my interior and exterior trim Space Grey or Gunmetal when I was having my front end done but all the body shops I talked to were reluctant to do it and warned me that it wouldn't adhere well or that the paint would crack/peel very easily so I just shelved it and figured I'd do vinyl like everyone else although I'd really prefer paint.

Paint will adhere just fine it's plastic panels same as bumpers, side skirts, mouldings etc.
Some shops may knock back this job as it's time consuming removing all the parts and a little awkward polishing afterword, basically they just like to stick to what they know ( bumpers/exterior panels ). Best bet would be to remove the panels yourself and take them into a Bodyshop and leave them there to be painted. You will find a shop that will do it, try smaller shops they'll be more likely todo the job, bigger shops are more interested In bigger jobs ie insurance work.

I need to do this to mine, but i would wrap it as i can spray but not to that level, any little mark on that interior it would stand out.

Just a quick question was your silver trim the style with like the diamond/pimple type effect?

Im just thinkin if i wrap it, its not going to come out smooth?

Chances are I will be doing the alloys next. Looks like there has been a poor DIY previously. Think I will do them gunmetal like the sport plus models. Was thinking I will leave this until winter is over but il most likely get them done first time I get the chance !!

The trim on the shifter knob is pealing, so I'm thinking of ideas of what todo with that. I was looking Into hydro dipping ( carbon fibre ) but does anyone know if the I drive knob comes off as I would want to keep the two matching.

Wow! Great result. I did the same but they need that final polish to really finish it off. Care to tell how you managed polished the pieces?

Mines was smooth to start off with. I'm not sure what I would do with the likes off that. Only thing that springs to mind is using body filler to fill up the holes but that would be a very time consuming method. Best bet would be try and find some 2nd hand smooth trim and the sell yours on if it is the trim I'm thinking off that is a pretty well sought after one you should sell it no probs

Flattened using p1500 then 3000 trizact 3m pad
Then buffed with chemical guys v34 compound. ( rotary buff )
It is very tricky. Some tips I would advise are.
*Have someone hold the parts while you polish them.
*only flatten areas that need it ( I would not advise p1500 the full piece just aim to flatten any orange peal or dirt etc and avoid corners, edges etc trust me one spec of dirt on an edge looks a whole lot better than a nasty burn through !! )
*DO NOT RUSH take plenty of time
*Make several light passes with the buff. ( be patient if u try and go heavy atol on these you will burn through )

The hardest piece is by far the centre with the idrive knob and gear stick. I didn't bother polishing the door panels got a good finish off the gun.

Sounds very true, but the trim is on my back burner for now. I already needed pads & rotors and now my LPFP is on it's way out. When I got my bodywork done I was already having trouble with getting a bodyshop that would deal with my insurance and replace my front bumper with the replica M3 one etc. so when they were hesitant about the additional work for the trims I just left it alone.

looking freaking amazing, i agree a wrap can't give the same depth the paint gives.

Enjoy your ride..
