Done yesterday. Works perfect. I found some leftover push button with square head (which is exactly square size of opening at fog switch, so it sits there perfectly), piece of hot glue stick, cut it at the same lenght so it matches the existing switch and it works like a charm. Just broke off the 4 clips from the fog button to be allowed to be pushed and that's. It easy and another $100 to be spend on something else. Downsize? No light icon on the push button, that's all. Thanks for the idea. I still have plenty of buttons I used left, if anybody wants....

Tried doing this mod and could not cut off completely the 3 or 4 "tabs" that hold the rear fog button (in other words, the 3 or 4 "tabs" that prevent the button from being pushed). On my button I could only see 3 tabs (2 on the bottom, IIRC, which weren't too hard to cut, and 1 tab between the switches near the corner of the switch, as noted in the picture at the front of the DIY). Is there a 4th "tab"? If so, how do you get to it?
1. Do you need to remove the rear fog button to do this mod? If so, do you just release the two "connectors" using small screwdrivers as noted on the interior of the button? 2. Do you cut-off the tabs prior to removing button (I would think you would need to cut the tabs first otherwise the button won't come out)? I know it seems that these questions may have been addressed, but honestly, I can't for the life of me get the tabs cut-off, particularly the 3rd tab between the buttons (or even get to the 4th tab as I can't see it). Pleae help. Thanks!! |

its been a while but i'm pretty sure the last tab is located inside where you can not see. you'll need a small razor to work around it but it isnt that hard to do

Very cool DIY- I'll have to try it tonight. Anyone figure out whether certain model years have the white post already? I saw that a few of you reported it already being there and just cutting off the tabs to activate it. Makes you wonder what else you can activate by just cutting tabs lol.

Did the mod this weekend. Yeah, getting that switch button out was a pain, but it's all done now. I used one of those wire caps you use to twist wires in (orange) and two nickels. JB welded the two nickels together, and then JB welded the cap to the two nickels and it works like a charm! The cap fit nice and snug into the button. Thanks!

Did it today using white piece, (saved myself time from fabricating one)
thanks to this and http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26545 DYIs . Took me ~30 min, most of the time 15 min, to understand how to unclip the button out of the assembly. Part of DYI that wasn't very clear to me, PIC showing which 2 clips need to be pulled would of been of huge help. The rest was a breeze. Used exacto knife to cut off plastic tabs preventing the use of the button, after the button was removed from assembly. Also would like to thank:
... now I'll go and play with my "new" rear fogs

Same for 2011 e90!!!

FYI for people following this - 2011 e90 335xi already has the "white piece" needed to depress the button. Installation is as simple as the directions. No need for a dremel either, a sharp razor blade with a little bit of gentile pressure will clip those four tabs. DIY in less than 20 minutes, and the cost to you is $0.00!!!!! I know they were in my 2010 so I would think they probably are in the 09. Either way, it only takes a few minutes to take it apart to see. Go for it!
