335i Exhaust Woes After Service Visit

Hey Guys,

Need some help. My daily driver is a 2011 335i M Sport and it's totally stock, no modifications. I recently had a major oil gasket housing leak repaired (which required new drive belt, radiator hose) due to spillage. I also had spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter replaced and the rear differential serviced all over at J & F Motors in Arlington, VA. Great shop and great guys work there.

After picking it up I noticed it sounds nothing like when I dropped it off. Inside the cabin there's basically no evidence of noise coming from the exhaust -- and that's a sound I can normally hear and feel at idle, even when warm. Upon driving off, the engine also makes very little sound, and all of it is now mostly mechanical whirring similar to the 328i. It sounds totally subdued. Under hard acceleration it's barely there even above 3,500 rpm. I let it sit all day at work after taking it out for a few test runs. On the way home there was no improvement.

I feel like I got my car back running smooth but he's missing his cojones. Any ideas what could cause this? Has it happened to you?

Maybe your car had the "Golf Tee Mod" prior (either the vacuum line or the harness) and they saw the code for it and put it back to stock?

did they reset the adaptive learning, you may need to teach it how you drive again.

The DME software must have been updated.
I've had this happen a few times after servicing.

It's probably time to buy a PE exhaust or the 335is mufflers. I agree with the above posters, software update? golf tee mod reversed? You can get used IS mufflers for around $500 used or new for $800 and some change. PE exhaust for about $1000 at BMW at Morristown or used PE mufflers for around $700-800.00. If you have the sedan, you'll have to delete the resonator and have a SS X-Pipe installed in its place to get the full effects of either exhaust.

Car seems to launch a bit differently from a dead stop. It's more smooth linear power like a NA engine versus the punch from the turbo boost after initial tip in on the throttle.

I've never heard of the adaptive learning. I'm a newbie. How does that work?

So if the DME software was updated, is there a way to adjust the setting or am stuck with the new muzzled sound until a future update? Thanks for chiming in.

That's probably my next course of action. I don't want the car to raise the dead when I drive through my neighborhood, or annihilate ear drums on the highway. Just a bold, clean exhaust note and sound coming through the car. Seems like the Performance Exhaust accomplishes that.

Initially I doubted the golf tee mod was done as the original owner was a middle aged doctor who did mostly highway commuting from Nashville to Atlanta. But the car definitely had a mild drone which resonated through the cabin and occasionally caused a faint rattle at takeoff and on the highway.

The way the car is now, I can barely hear my rev matches when I'm downshifting.

I have the coupe so

If you have the coupe, all you need to do is decide whether you want the 335is mufflers or P.E. exhaust. You can get a good feel of how both sound on YouTube.

Try explaining to the dealer what has happened but I don't think you can go back to previous software version.
I have had several instances of the exhaust changes but I just live with it.
One time I had a terrible drone on the freeway and on/off throttle change, I took it back to the dealer and they cured it. Don't know what they did!

The cars ECU learns your drive habits, like how hard to accelerate and adjust the performance accordingly such as shift points with automatic transmission. I had the software updated a few times on the ECU for various issues over the years and every time they did this the car goes back to factory default and learns how you drive. My experience has been the car is usually more aggressive, since I use the car as may daily driver and I trend to try and max out gas millage over performance so the car then to be more tame over time.

Your ride is running smooth because it is a well oiled machine again and if it's running better than before stop worrying about the quietness and get the BMW PE installed. You will like the meaner more aggressive sound with no inside drone.

Love the BMW PE on my 335 and couldn't be happier.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I unplugged the exhaust valve vacuum line (via the trunk) over the weekend. Lo and behold, the sound is much closer to what I am used to. Not quite, but it seems to be gradually getting there.

So it appears to be a combination of the exhaust valve mod and the DME software learning my driving style. I'm definitely hearing more of the driving music I'm used to. What a relief.

I'm definitely getting the PE installed as soon as the winter weather clears out.
