Left and Right motor mounts going according to dealer - not under warranty

hey guys,

According to the dealership, the right and left rubber motor mounts are starting to crack. Quote for parts and labor is $811.59.

I took my car in for the check engine light, and they replaced the thermostat, as well as the oil sensor, both which were under my extended service platinum warranty. Why would the rubber motor mounts not be?

I called BMW of North America, and they provided me with a PDF (attached), showing that the "Powertrain Plus" warranty included Engine Mounts, while the Gold and Platinum do not. . . This is complete BS, I was under the impression Gold has everything powertrain has plus some, and Platinum has everything had everything gold has plus some.

Looking around for bad motor mounts, the videos show really bad engine and car shaking, both of which are NOT present in my car. Do you guys think they simply turned the car on, moved the transmission from P, to N to D and felt some vibration, so they are saying bad mounts to get money from me? How bad is it if the enginer mounts do end up cracking?

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers,
mastarron

I see you live in NYC, so maybe that has something to do with it, but engine mounts rarely go bad. Mine are original at 318,000 miles. At 297,000 I did the oil pan gasket, which necessitates removing the mounts from the subframe. I checked them when free of the subframe and hanging off the engine. The looked in fine shape. IIRC the mounts are hydraulic so they'd be leaking if they were bad. Any possibility the shop is blowing smoke?

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Do you have a copy of your actual extended service contract?

Not only does that PDF indicate that your engine coverage is "comprehensive" regardless of dot locations, this PDF from 2014 indicates that both Platinum and Gold include powertrain plus coverage (which includes the mounts)

I will be checking all of my documents this week and follow up with the dealer. I was confident the Platinum included pretty much everything(besides wear and tear)

I do feel like they could be blowing smoke. The car doesnt shake like the videos I see when youtubing "bad motor mount". I had my cousin rev the engine while I looked at the engine bay, and he even switched gears. The engine never "jumped" like it does in the videos. So they might just be trying to pull some additional work.

I will see the documents I signed, if it includes the motor mounts.

I dont know of any mechanics that would be willing to check the mounts for me, if you guys know anybody in the yonkers area, let me know.

Update,

the motor mounts were never changed, and the car still runs great. Dealer blowing smoke to get some money. I even had an indy shop check the mounts out recently when I had to replace an O2 sensor, and they confirmed the mounts looked fine.

Mine have 376,000. The internet drives this shit. One person does it, then it catches on, then dealers see dumbasses are doing it so they recommend it as a necessary repair. Owner goes WTF, then Googles it and sees it as a legit repair item.

You are absolutely correct! Thats why these forums are awesome, you get to learn about the car and make an educated decision if you are being ripped off or not.

I always keep an eye out for your e90 mile updates! I was thinking of getting an m3, but im too attached to my e92 328. These things are tanks, and they are such good daily drivers.

Im at 113k miles 2011 328i mSport xDrive. I have automatic transmission, wish I had the manual!

Is it a common issue in the 335? That could very well be it. I go through my okd posts from time to time and I had to give everybody another update

I'm not 100% sure of interval but I know for sure they won't last lifetime of the car haha. The 335i ones are also filled with like a oil/fluid, I think 328i as aswell not sure.

the turbos on the 335 probably put more pressure and resistance on the mounts causing them to wear quicker. Either way, Im glad I didnt do them on mine, car has always been riding great. There was a little rough idle which I think I fixed last night by replacing the alternator pulley. Car sounds and idles REALLY smooth right now. Just need to figure out the battery discharge issue Im facing now and go from there.

Have you seen the price of the 335is mounts? Some retailers priced at $600 each!

I know... I was proactively looking at motor mounts on my 335is and noticed the right side is is like 670$.

EDIT: Actually, ECS and Bimmerworld have it for around 250$. Surprised FCP list much higher $.
