Steve, quite frankly, whenever you post something, I hear Mr 'Talk to me' saying it!

I've been looking into a remap on my 335i and have been put off by all the seeming potential problems - I need the car to be 100% reliable and am not going to risk the bolt-on xede box.

However, does anyone know if the remap done by Birds (expensive at over £2k!!!) is likely to be more reliable? I understand that this is done as a modification directly to the ECU and not a bolt-on box, but does it work in a more reliable manner than the xede/procede?

Strangely enough I'm taking a trip to Birds with SJ next week to have a look at their 335i. From what I remember, the Hartge add-on box is a tuning box and not a remapped ECU, as tuners have still been unable to break the code to access the ECU directly on the petrol engine. The thing with Birds is that they will warranty any engine modification they do for 3 years (think it's 3 years) - which means that if the engine goes caput because of the tuning box, they'll fix it all.

That's pretty confidence inspiring. It's a lot of money though!

I have been in discussion with Birds over the remap. It is expensive compared to a typical DMS cost...but then DMS can not offer an ECU remap yet.
The Birds product is not a plug in box (I beleive it is in the Diesel) it is a complete ECU remap which involves sending the ECU to Germany. The turn around time estimated for this is 5 days, so if you go down this route you loose the use of the car for these days. The positive side is they claim to have done a lot of testing on the remap and back it up with a warranty and claim not to have any issues/fauls with any of the conversions done over 20 years. The ECU can be reverted back at a small charge. From my dealings they seem very professional and positive. I am still deciding if it is worth the cost!
