How can i make 2011 335d reliable

Hello,

I'm planning on picking up a 2011 335d to ship to europe. I would like to know what preventative maintenance i can do before i ship. I want to make sure all the big problems are taken care of. If anyone can help that would be great also i know nothing about these engines but have heard they are good.

Forgetting about the awful emissions system, I’d start by replacing the red boost hose, the top turbo oil feed line, and the harmonic dampener. And maybe vacuum lines depending on age.

In spite of what you read on the forums and my personal experience...... I can say a lot of folks make it well over 100k without emissions issues. If your car doesn’t have a history of problems it’s probably going to be okay for a while.

I am one of many without issues. 110K miles on the car, everything intact, bone stock, original injectors. In it's life the car had one CBU cleaning at 54K, NOx sensor at 70K, and replacement DEF tank (usual bad temp sensor) at 85K, all covered under warranty.

They did a ECU software update with the CBU cleaning and ever since then the car uses very little DEF, in the order of 1 quart per 1000 miles.

While I've had emissions problems (including NOx sensors and DEF tank replacement, etc.), the last couple problems have not been emissions related: glow plugs and controller, and throttle. They had the manifold off and the CBU was mild-to-moderate. 138K miles.

About 310000 miles on mine, 325D though. Engine stock with DPF/EGR.

I use Common Rail fuel additive every fillup and change oil 6500 miles (both Liqui Moly products). Most reliable engine i've ever owned... just drive and enjoy.

My 335d has 80k miles. Quick break down of issues:

SCR cat failure 35k miles (warranty)
NOX Sensor failure 40k (warranty)
Glow Plug Mod Failure 55k (out of pocket)
Active Tank Failure 60k miles (warranty)
Red Boost Hose Failure 60k (out of pocket)
Top turbo oil feed failure 60k (out of pocket)
DEF Delivery pump failure 80k ($$$ out of pocket)
Cracking Harmonic Damp 80k (out of pocket)
Failed MAF sensor 80k (out of pocket)

Preventative I did DPF cleaning at 55k, trans and diff fluid at 60k, thermostat at 75k. Overall the car has been decently reliable. One issue is finding a knowledgeable bmw diesel tech.

I'm curious as to how you managed to do that. I'm sure US Customs would be very curious as well. But no judgment here on your possible grey market purchase, on to your question:

The US market cars have a selective catalytic reduction system not present on the Euro market cars. Basically: a urea tank and injection system to aid in NOx reduction.

Anyway, are you sure that you really have a Euro-spec model? Or was that just something the shifty used car salesman said in an effort to make you think you were buying something super-special?

To the best of our USA/CA knowledge, all USA/CA E90 335d (10,000 cars in model years 2009, 10, 11) were BlueTec (SCR/DEF system, with significantly different exhaust/DPF/DOC. Look for the PDF's that are titled "AdvancedDiesel with ...", Introduction to Diesel ...", or "ST810 Advanced Diesel Technology ...". I believe that all have the differences listed.

Now, if you've bought an F3x, all bets are off (only 535d/540d, 740d have diesels, and they are N57 not M57.)

I'm guessing you've got the same car like everyone else does here.

535d and the 540d use different engines. B57 in the 540d.
