Heh, yeah i had a closer look at the head, its not bad in there. Hardly any carbon, just a deep golden color. Some wear on the cams, i might end up buying yours. I want to see if the S55 rockers will fit - about 90% of the valvetrain is the same as the N52.

Purty cool for a quarter million miles. Lemme know on the cams. Anything special about the S55 rockers?

I was going to buy one and check it out. The S55 redline is 7600rpm stock, and it uses the same springs, lifters, and the rest of the rockers (there are three, only one is unique to the s55, the rest are identical to the n55 and n52). Im thinking possibly less weight or friction to support the higher stock redline.

Oh. Makes sense, good thinking.

Yeah, basically whatever stock parts i can use to support an 8k redline, i want to look into.

Now, boarding a plane. No N52 fun for at least a week. :-(

Cool. I don't have any use for low end torque so the added weight would make an N54 doubly pointless for tracking. Like hass I'm looking for a high revving, high peak hp, lightweight engine to go in a track car although mine is an e90 instead of an e30.

I actually wondered why more people don't do N54 swaps, or even S54s out of the Z4M. compared to swaps into another chassis, the E90 is pretty simple.

an S54 powered E91 would be pretty awesome!

Like you my original plan was for an S54 swap and widebody conversion but the cost of a full Motec system really added up. The plan was a fully stripped car with no more need for the DME at all. Might get there eventually...

I had a rental Corolla S. It was okay-ish around town, as long as you left it in sport mode, but you kind of had to stomp on it non stop. And the ergonomics sucked for a 5 hour drive.

Getting off the plane and back into the BMW with heated sport seats was so, so nice.

Its kind of hilarous that they even bother with a sport mode.

To be honest though, i don't hate it as much as the Jetta i had last time. Yeesh!

Back on topic, searching for what to use as trumpets and a filter. I think ITG will work great - they have an element that is 608mm long, which is more than wide enough. They also sell a set of 48mm trumpets with 90mm bellmouths - perfect to fit on an N52 with its 91mm cylinder spacing.

They sell blank base plates that I can modify to use with my adapters & trumpets. This should flow much better than socks or screens, and is far cheaper than something like a CSL airbox. The only question is, how long should the trumpets be, and how much room do I really have..

Are you going to run individual throttle bodies? I think i remember reading about someone that ran some from an s52 years ago. I'll see if i can find the thread

no.. there is no need for throttles on an N52. All we need are trumpets.

I hacked up a single stage manifold to use the flange about a year ago. The plan is to 3D print some adapters that I will glue onto the stock manifold flange, and bolt some 45 or 48mm velocity stacks to those.

I wish you were local. I would be the alcoholic cheer leader in the garage talking about "YOU CAN DO IT!"

Hass

two questions:

1. Why not start with a N52N block. It was my understanding the rods and crankshafts were upgraded from the first generation N52.

2. How do you do a compression check on a motor with VVL? Forcing the throttle open is not going to help.

You probably mentioned in the other thread how you're going to control the throttle but if you wouldn't mind shedding some light to your "no throttle body just trumpets" setup. I'm assuming you're still going to have butterfly valves in the trumpets right?

No, the n52 doesnt need the throttle for anything. Its only there as a backup and to generate a small vacuum at idle. Theres no reason to add butterflys.
