In wich case the driver WOULD of know to wear the necessary safety equipment. Race drivers may be mental, but they're not stupid!!!

Nathan, as far as im aware, between stages it is common practise not to wear helmet

1) they are not racing
2) it on public roads and inbetween racing there not allowed to use helmets on public roads in some countrys, so inbetween stages no helmets are worn.!

Alot of racing/rally drivers when young and competing drive carelessy and dangerously on the road.. read old books about the like of peroni and villenauve etc caining to a fro airports...

I remember readin about the antics of the 500cc bike GP riders in their hire cars. Apparently one of the games was to see how long they could go without using the brakes, so they'd get an auto hire car so they could slap it in reverse and floor it to brake.

Rumour has it that Rob McElnea (Virgin Yamaha BSB boss now) holds the record at ............ 2 weeks!

No brakes - thats funny.

I remember years ago when coming home from the farm in my Reanalt 9, I used to see how far I could drive without hands on the steering and just using my knees to steer.
My right foot was on the accelerator while i shuffled the steering with both my knees to get round corners.
The skills acquired still actually comes in handy at times when you want eat/drink something awkward.

The things you do when you are bored

once i went to shift hard from 1st to 2nd at the big m25/a1 roundabout at South Mimms again and it snapped big stylee

jumped to third, thought id fucked the box, gear stick was limp and i was stuck in 3rd all the way home, topped out 78mph on the guvenor (1.7tdi astra)

when i got to town had to stall, them start it and slip the clutch like a c*** to pull away HAHA

got home ripped the gaiter off and snapped the gear stick out of the linkage thing as i roared away from the lights 60 odd miles ago

I once tried to replace the brakes on my first car (ford cortina 1.6).

I'd done it before with some assistance, but this was my first time flying solo.

I too the old shoes off and pumped the brakes before I loaded the new ones. Unfortunately I forgot to take the cap of the master cylinder first and the callipers shot out of their seats, meaning I had no space to fit the new pads.

I ended up driving it to a garage with just the handbrake, where they forced the calipers back into position with compressed air.

Later on I had a problem with the same car, where it stalled every time I lifted off the throttle. I put up with this for about 2 months - using the handbrake to stop the car.

Then I drove it home - doing a steady 90 on the A1 where my stepdad found that the front half of the carbureter was literally hanging off.

They don't make cars that run with half a carb any more
