Living/Working in Canada.

Hello all,

I'm currently looking into various avenues in terms of life change and career progression, one avenue would be the possibility of working in Canada.

Has anyone on here moved from England?

What is the % of French speaking nationals? My French isn't great but I can get by with the spoken word.

Anyone work for Canada Post?

Regards,

French is spoken mostly in Quebec. The majority of people in Quebec are blilingual (French & English). In Montreal, lots of people get by with English only, but I do not recommend it. It is feasible though.

French is spoken in all other provinces but to a much lesser degree. Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick are where you can find a good number albeit limited. But the great majority speak English.

I'm English and moved to Canada (Toronto) in 2003 and have lived here since then. If you want to move here permanently then in the long term you need to apply to immigrate and get a permanent resident card. From UK you would usually apply to come to Canada as a skilled worker. If you look at the Canada Government website here it gives links to the possible ways to apply.

If you have family here already then you can get them to sponsor you (please note I believe they will have a financial responsibility to you for a period), or if you plan to start a business here. There is a link there for the skilled worker program which if you look in there includes a 5 min questionnaire that will give you an estimate on your eligibility.

I went through the skilled worker application several years ago and it takes some time (I think mine took around 2 years). I came first on a work visa (a company I had worked with previously offered me a position here and sorted out a work visa, after a year or so here I started the immigration application).

As for language if you apply as a skilled worker to go to Quebec you will need to be able to speak French, for the rest of the country English alone is fine. If you do apply as a skilled worker you will get some points for any French skill though.

If you are pretty sure you want to move to Canada then I would start the application as soon as possible. As I said my application took about 2 years and I don't think the wait times have come down at all. It does cost around $500 to $600 (about 300 quid) to apply so if money is tight then you want to be pretty sure before you apply, but if you think you'd like the option to come then I'd apply now.

If you look around the government site you can download the application and you can start to gather up all the required documentation. This in itself can take quite some time.

west of Qubec, French isn't in the top-3 languages. Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin...much more relevant outside Quebec.

Very few, if any, Canada Post employees could afford a BMW. But once you are in, you are in for life.

Employment situation is bettrer in Western Canada....and we have mountains.

That was a blanket statement which isn't necessairily true. Most people can afford a BMW regardless of income it just depends what else you're willing to sacrafice.

Why are you hung up on Canada Post? The mail system is slowly dying. You want secure, go into health care. People will always get sick.
