My car has this lag in acceleration. When I step on the gas pedal, the car dosen't respond immediately. There is this pause before the acceleration kicks in. I have no turbo so there should be no turbo-lag issue. What could be the problem? Would taking it back to bmwhk be the best solution? Or can other solutions be found?

What's the rpm when u step on the gas pedal?????? I notice the car is lazy when it is under 1500rpm.

Wolfman, is it something already there or "a change" in your car u just realised lately?

since it is no longer a wired pedal and everything is now controlled by the mighty computer in the car, there is a slight delay in acceleration response, but it should be very slight (within a second). It took me about 1 week for me to get used to it when I change from my previous E36 to this E90. However, if u feel the delay is substantial, take it back for a check.

I also have that lag. The car waits for about half a second before it will response to my pedal input. It's a well known problem with the drive by wire pedal. I got tired of it and got myself a pbx and that solved the problem.

Like they said, this is to do with the dbw system, where the 328 (I think that's what you're driving now) and other non 335 or m e90s are 'tuned' so that accelerating from a standstill is gradual. At least this is what the dealer told me when I was in the states.

Kinda stupid I know, I think this is the same thing they did to the clutch in the early manual e90s that ended up with people doing the clutch-spring-delete mod. They made it so that the car 'protects' the clutch by limiting the speed the clutch engages, and thus helping shitty manual drivers from bad launches. However, it also prevents skilled drivers from dumping the clutch.

Putting the car in DS mode helps the response a bit, but it'll be nowhere as responsive as your old 335 or e36 (I still think my old e36 is a better drive)

If it weren't for the stupid hills in HK I'll be driving a manual... lol

Oh, I forgot to add, that's only for the 'acceleration lag/delay'. If your acceleration is unsmooth, ie, if you floor it and power comes and goes (surges), that's a problem with your engine and I would take it into bmwhk for sure. Could be something has little as bad gas or as big as... anything from dying fuel pump to cracked pistons. lol.

I have a 335i back in the states. Here, I'm driving a 325i. This issue wasn't so noticeable before, but for some reason it's becoming more noticeable now. If it's a dbw issue then i may take it back to bmwhk. Bottom line, I just want a more immediate response when I step on the gas rather then wait for the ecu to figure things out so slowly. If it's the ecu, can it be remapped to have a more immediate response when I step on the gas? It's annoying because sometimes when I want to overtake or get out of the way of some road hazard, the car seems to stop and think before it lets out the hp and torque.

Update- I called BMW about it and they said it has something to do with the computer learning your driving style. If I do lots of slow city driving then it's likely I will be light on the pedal, so the throttle response will be slower. Whereas if I do more highway driving, then the throttle response should be quicker. That sounds plausible, but I'm not sure if that's the case. I do fair amount of highway driving and there is still this pause when I hit the gas. Hmmmm...

When I got the 335i, I complained about the same thing to my dealer and they told me the same thing as well. The thing is when I got the car, due to break-in period, I couldn't drive aggressively

Basically it learns for about the first 1000km and then sticks to it.

So after the break-in period, I had them reset the learning transmission. It did seem to perk up a bit--though till this day, I'm not sure if its real or imagined...
