I would clean the (2) Vanos solenoids. If cleaning won't fix it, I would replace them. About $30 each on RockAuto. Probably a little more since you're shipping to Canada.

I recently had a similar issue on an N52 X3 (neighbors car) and the problem was fixed after replacing both Vanos solenoids. We also changed VCG and all 6 plugs and coils due to misfires. But the solenoids was what fixed the shaking and poor idle.

Tell your buddy to leave his "really good" OBD2 scanner at home. It's useless unless his scanner can read manufacturer specific codes such as an AutoLogic Blue box ($15k), Autel Maxisys/Maxicheck ($350-$2,000), or a Foxwell NT520 ($150).

OBD2 scanners will spit out generic P-codes which are useless. If you're computer savvy, buy a $20 K+Dcan cable on eBay and download BMW INPA for free. This is the cheapest way to have dealer level diagnostics for you E9X BMW.

If you're not computer savvy enough to get INPA running, then buy a Foxwell NT520 for about $150.

If you have multiple vehicles in your household that are different makes/models, the best bang for the buck would be the AUTEL Maxicheck mx808 for $350. It reads manufacturer specific codes for 80 makes (Asian, European, Domestic).

If you plan on opening a mechanic shop, get yourself an AutoLogic Blue Box for $15,000 lol
