Clay Bar Residue

Hello all,

I was trying my hands at claybar-ing my E92 yesterday. I washed the car, then use water with ONR as my lube.

However, I noticed that the claybar was leaving sticky residue at the first point of contact, or if I was leaving the claybar at one spot for an extended period of time.

The clay picked up dirt properly, but it left a lot of residue. It was nothing that Klasse AIO couldn't take out, but still... I was wondering if I am doing something wrong?

Thanks!

I don't think so. Maybe try a little more lube. I get some residue as well. A light polish is one way to deal with it. I do an alcohol rinse down and a wax job afterward. Seems to take care of the issue.

Yeah, I have no issues taking the residue off- I just didn't know if it was normal to get the residue while claying.

Perfectly normal to have some residue, but I've never had it be sticky. I usually just polish over the residue, but sometimes I'll wash the car after claying.

Sounds like you need to use more lube

I use QD liberally, clay an area, add more QD if necessary, and it wipes off clean.

Well I guess that I may not be using enough lube. I am using a claybar from Pinnacle (Ultra fine, I think).

Looks like I need at least 1/2 gallon to clay the entire car! Because I used about 500ml, but that didn't seem enough.

sounds like you are using plenty by volume, what concentration was the ONR? possible you didn't have enough ONR.

Agreed, what was your dilusion ratio? I'm guessing you needed more ONR in the mix.

Use a higher ratio of ONR to water for your clay lube next time. If you're getting residue, it's because there isn't enough lubricity. I'm not a huge fan of ONR as clay lube in the first place, because there is a larger margin for error when you have to do the mixing yourself.
