On the fly golf tee mod

So basically since I first got my 335i, I have been contemplating this. I wanted something simple that allows me to open and close the muffler valve when I want.

I've seen where some people have the little remote to open and close it. I can only see this being beneficial if you may be are able to open as much or little as you want, To dial the volume to the preferred level. I am at a point where I want it loud or quiet, not an in between. And given that BMW has generously provided us with our own butterfly valve, why not use it.

My plan is to use the connector that allows for the golf tee mod from inside the trunk. (If you are unfamiliar with what I'm speaking of, check out this thread, http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=Golf+tee+mod) Granted my plan still leaves you susceptible to the code logging that disconnecting the connector does.

Testing the wires of the solenoid circuit leads me to believe that the circuit is power switched, and the red is ground and purple is power.

So my thought is to Cut the power and put a banana connector in line. This allows me to go back to stock operation should I want to. Using a 3pin on/off/on rocker switch, Where the common pin is attached to the power wire going toward the solenoid. 1 pin goes to the remaining stock power wire.

at this point, You could use a 2 pin, on/off rocker, and be able to switch between stock functionality and the golf tee mod on the fly.

But because I plan on deleting the driver side muffler (like the aggressiveness of the muffler delete), I want to silence it on demand as well. So for the third pin I will run a fused line to a constant (at least when the ignition is on, going directly to the battery or a constant "on" source will drain the battery).

Honestly for my preference, I would likely be happy with an on/off rocker where it eliminates the stock operation. But I figured that since it isn't any extra work to have the 3rd option, I might as well.

I will post pictures and operation video once I finish, but for now am looking for input from electronic fans for any glaring issues.

Jb4 does this through your steering wheel controls.

I'd love to get the jb4, but it's not in the cards for the time being. That being said, if opening and closing it takes as long as some of the other on the fly changes do, I'd still prefer this. I like that it takes a half second to change.

This is a great idea for those who have MHD and don't want to get a JB4.

I have switches coming. Does anyone know where I can get various colors of 20 gauge automotive wiring? preferably 6 bundled together. All I have found is either 500-1000' spools, or is just red or black.

There's a thread somewhere (i believe in the UK subforum) that shows how to build the harness/relay setup and use the wireless remote to control it on/off. I'll try to find it, as I know I posted in it.

Hmmm just leave it open all the time like everyone else... it's not much louder anyways. Like 5 decibels lol

That drone though...

Not to mention, there are more parts at play when it comes to perceived volume than just whether or not someone has the flap open; E90 vs E92, wastegate position, etc. all play a factor here in "how much louder" things might sound with the flap open.

This is very similar to the route I took, except mine has 3 options as opposed to 2. My setup has an always open option, always closed, and factory. Personally I have always preferred wired switches to wireless when possible, even when the install is more labor intensive. I think it's the old man in my brain.

Unfortunately I didn't check back on this until I was about done (still need to finish the always of part), so I didn't see that link. I wish I had for the sake of the connectors, I looked and looked and couldn't find them. Finally gave in and used spade connectors, in reality it will almost never be seen, so doesn't matter. But it's one of my OCD moments.

Let me know when you work late and young children. Every db counts.

But in the near future I will be removing the muffler on the driver side, so even a greater difference.

So, I was testing out the reaction time of the switch since the valve is vacuum driven. And while the opening is a bit slow (getting louder), the closing is instant. Which if one way will be slow, this is the best.

I will post pictures tonight.

If you do the PE mod and put the valve between the the two cans effectively you can have muffler delete when closed and PE when open

I'm planning on leaving it in the stock location, so it will function similar to stock, but with the muffler delete I don't have to mess with cutting open the muffler and what not. Once I do new tips I will probably do a new valve (function the same, but mine rattles).

First off I apologize for the crappiness of this drawing

Key :

S box = On/off/on switch
+ = power source (your call)
Black box = solenoid

Power to the solenoid is purple
Green wire from the switch is the common for both ONs

Description:
The solenoid is activated (valve closed) when it gets power. And deactivated when power is lost. The green common is connected to the solenoid side of the wire. And the blue to the other side of the stock signal/power wire. (Using this with a standard On/Off switch would allow you to switch between factory operation and open.) the orange wire acts as a constant signal not controlled by the car, therefore the valve stays closed.

This is the wire I used, it's a 20/3 which is perfect for this.

It will probably be a while, way too much going on right now. I may also do the new tips and valve all in one shot.
