From what I found in the ETK the high res board monitor for the latest m3 (2009) has part number 65 82 9 183 755 and its retail price in Germany is 803.40 euro plus 19% VAT. The CIC with voice control has part number 65 12 9 199 905 and its retail price is 480.17 plus 19% VAT.

Thanks...
Its interesting they changed the trim piece. When I first looked at the controller I was pretty certain it would go in the existing piece.

I'm now back in the same boat Technic. I traded in my 2008 M3 for a 2009 X5 ... which still has the older i-drive. 2010 gets the new one. I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread !! :-)

The whole controller shape is different... did not know that you traded in the M3. Hope that the hit was not that bad. These suckers are dropping like a rock in value...

Enjoy the X5!

Let me put it this way. My 08 M5 went for over $140k Canadian. I would estimate that today with 14,000km on, it is worth about 80k. I would be happy to pay 5-8k to get the upgrade to the new idrive because it is a world of difference and being a technology geek would make me such a happy camper... not to mention I have no interest in buying the new 2010 model just to get those gadgets and start the depreciation dive all over again.

I am happy to fund this project and do whatever we need for someone who has knowledge and skills to pull this off; then do it for my car hehe

Hey man, what happened to the Porsche? Did you sell it? What model BMW are you driving? I am back in VA dude, lets see if we can do a detail next month. The film still on too, never came off as I had feared. Well even though I no longer drive that much.

Not much to add...I have a 2009 LCI in the shop for iDrive lock ups and parts are extremely hard to get. My SA had to pull teeth to get a new CIC (opened a PUMA case) and the controllers have to come direct from Germany - none in the US at this time.

At least the 2009 console for the new controller is finally available to order... $275 at United BMW (sponsor).

The P/N of the cables connecting the computer to the monitor, as well as to the USB in the glovebox cannot be found by two different dealers in my area... without those cables this retrofit is imposible.

These guys (in Poland I think, but page seems to be in German?) are offering the parts for the CIC retrofit, but it doesn't say anything about the cables. Like Technic was talking about, these cables are crucial... The auction is for the CIC, the monitor, and controller.. interestingly enough, the pictures show she the display in English. I wonder what region its from/if it matters on the CIC.

Here's the link to the auction:

(someone make an offer!)

BMW will be offering a vastly improved voice activation version by September 2009 production, which means that the CIC will be updated again by that date.

So that's another thing to consider, unless some current CIC used parts show up at ridiculous prices somewhere.

I hadn't heard anything about that - is it gonna be like a Ford "Sync" type thing?

Yeap, that's the video... I think that it should be a software update and using a considerable space in the HDD (space that is currently not in use but reserved for upgrades like this).

So I don't know if this could be OEM retrofitted to the existing CIC or simply another/new CIC P/N will be issued with this upgrade.

Aside from finding the cables and acquiring CIC hardware, the biggest hurdle I see is actually programming this system, at least with BMW dealer-level equipment.

From my understanding, there will not be a way to program this system on the car unless BMW comes out with an official retrofit (software) package on the dealer systems. My fear is retrofitting this system, getting it all working with Autologic (or whatever means) and not being able to reprogram the car with conventional means (BMW SSS, or newest Gen system.) This would suck if some other module in the car died and you needed to update all modules/etc...

If the CIC could be programmed to the car, I'm sure assist/MULF would go along with that... that's the big "if." My bet is hooking it all up to the car and attempting to program it will fail based on incorrect part numbers installed in the car. It would sure be nice if BMW "quietly" allowed CIC part numbers to be programmed to the earlier gen E90's - then it likely wouldn't be a problem.

This is what I believe happened, myInfo is activated in Canada, and it seems as though the North American TCU's are capable of this functionality but not programmed to do so. As a computer engineer I know that the IT systems always evolve with the product, and from a business prospective it's always very not cost-effective to restructure your entire IT system. Around every ten years, you would have to overhaul your systems as new technologies evolve, though still you do your best to keep it as similar and compatible as possible with your old systems, that's just good practice.

In any case, I still don't understand the difference between a MULF and a TCU. If my NA TCU contains an AT&T sim chip, would switching that chip with a valid local chip allow my idrive to connect to bmw assist?? That's something I can test right away...

On the other hand, I read somewhere that you can update your iDrive software through the USB port, by storing the files in a flash disk on a particular folder path which the iDrive will recognize and automatically download and install. I couldn't find the site where I read that for the life of me, if only I could find it and get my hands on a newer version of the iDrive software?!?!? I think my car would probably be at the dealership right now....

Another thought is that there are these computers available for sale on the market, where you can connect to the ECU through the OBCD to read and re-flash anything into the car...wouldn't that be handy in our research on the subject on the table??

P.S. If some modules aren't compatible with the new CIC, which ones would they be?? Probably 2 or 3 small units I don't see the harm in replacing them too if we already retrofit %75 of the whole system.

I dunno why I got this strong hunch that the CIC will recognize all the other units.

TCU is one of them, I guess we can look at a 2009 TCU and see if it's different.

What do u mean by programming the CIC to the car?? What is Autologic?? Do u think the newer iDrive software could actually work on the older iDrive?? Maybe??

That's what I thought at the beginning, but I read somewhere that the CCC itself doesn't have internet connectivity functionality, that is the only technical difference I can see besides the higher resolution screen...

Am I making a valid argument here or am I just confusing everybody??
