Head unit blown. Just fed my head unit with an amplified output.

I had just finished upgrading my base system by installing a cleansweep and 6 channel amp when I stupidly mixed up the head unit feed to the left rear that should have gone to the clean-sweep with the output left rear from my amp. I turned the system on and there was a short high-pitched noise then nothing.

I have just disconnected the head unit outputs to see if there is any sign of life. I’m not sure if this is the right way to measure the outputs but with a multi-meter set to AC there is approx. 40mV from the right channel front and rear and about 20mV from the front left and nothing from the left rear. I also connect a speaker to see if the audio could be heard. The right channel could but it was vey crackly and faint. The left channel could not be heard.

Have I wrecked my head-unit or something worse. Any help greatly appreciated or recommendations for a car hifi repairer.

Prob cheaper to get a new HU rather than pay anyone to diagnose it tbh.

Pretty sure even the most basic HU will need coding.

So do you think that even if i manage to source a replacement i will still need to get it coded to my car.
I'm really confused how i get this fixed without going to the main dealer, i'm sure he will want both kidneys.

Don't think it needs coding. I put my pro HU in the_italian's CCC equipped car to test his system and it worked fine. As long as you get the same one as you've got, it'll be fine. If you buy one that cane from a logic 7 car and yours doesnt then it'll need coded, yes.

so do you think that as long as a get a professional head unit the same as mine, that i will be able to get it coded to suit my needs. i have seen a replacement on ebay but the seller does not know if the donor car was a base, hif or logic 7 but it looks identical to mine. i imagine all the professional head units look the same.

OP, What he said.
Albeit, some features may not work on your car.
I have replaced my HU with LCI HU and without coding new HU had phone option on it. It did not work on my car and as soon as I coded it to my car, it came up with the compatible options of my car.

In your case, if you have telephone and HU from the donor's car hasn't, then you would defo require coding.

Professional HU can be coded to:
Base
Hi-fi
Logic 7

however most of the cars in UK comes with base unit and those who have hi-fi or logic 7, I do not see them selling HUs on ebay (except if breakers are selling it).

I have sold mine for £75 couple of months ago (cheapeast on ebay), if that gives you some idea.

Your right. the Ebay seller are breakers and they are still asking between £400 and £500.
however i did find this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-profes...item4d078e553c

Do you think this will work in a UK BMW.

Why did you sell your head unit. I'm wondering if you have fitted something better that still makes use of the OEM sat nav screen.

£500?! Wtf?!

Just go on eBay and search for 'e90 professional'. Don't pay more than £100 - £130 or so.

I am curious, the Head unit you linked to on ebay states it is with Bluetooth and USB.
Does that mean simply changing the HU can give you USB input and BT?

When searching, and before settling for an aftermarket kit it appeared that to get BT and/or USB was a very expensive exercise that involved coding/replacing some module in the boot.

What he said.

If you search our classified section, you may find a headunit. I remember somebody selling it here.

A quick ebay search revealed this to be cheapest. That is a steal price.

And if you are after LCI head unit then this is for you.

Front, rear, side mirrors LCI conversion. Leemans is our champion here.

I have skipped side mirrors as I find pre-LCI mirrors shaped better compared to LCI.

New headunits come with built in bluetooth and link to USB. Connecting DAB is also possible with compatible part going into the trunk.

The only drawback is to code them to hi-fi which is slightly out of the way.

I see your point. Head unit and all the permutation there are, is very confusing.
On face value it does suggest that all those features would be available by purchasing this single unit. My car has a series of separate modules for the separate features i.e blue tooth and DAB. i am guessing but i think these modules will still be needed.

Forbious: I'd happily pay £130 for a replacement but there are non on ebay for that price. So if you come across one please let me know.

maKKan00: Are you saying i could up grade my system to the LCI type.

Ebay has one at the moment. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-3-SERI...item2579044dce

g00se, there are loads on ebay at the moment.

Right,

LCI just basically means facelift. Makkan changed his boot, lights, bonnet, bumper etc etc to make it look like the facelift car. When BMW facelifted the car, apparently they changed the radio too and made bluetooth part of the headunit rather thatn a separate module. If you didnt have it before, you'd still need to code the car for it and add mics and stuff too to get bluetooth to work.

Don't worry about the satnav retrofit - wait.. unless... do you have satnav at the moment??

My system is the CCC model. double din. The one you pointed out on ebay is different. You see why the breaker are asking so much.

My head unit look like the one in this link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-3-SERI...item3ccd46ef14
