You gave up too easy though. You rolled over and they got what they wanted, the cheap payout!

First thing you do is show them Autotrader. Glass's guide is just that, a guide and is about as valid as "my mate dave says".

9.5k isn't the end of the world but you'd have got 11 out of them based on what is on autotrader by hassling them.

Who was the insurer btw?
Unfortunately I didn't give up too easily, I fought them for a week on it, until they provided me with a written final offer. With this, you can go to the financial ombudsman service, which I did. I only just got a reply from them yesterday after a month of waiting.

I didn't have the spare cash at the time to wait 1 month for the sake of a grand or so.

The insurer was Elephant (underwritten by Admiral), and Admiral handled the claim.

Also it doesn't work like that these days, they are not regulated to use adverts of other cars for sale, it states this in black and white on the Financial Ombudsman Service website.

The only way I would of get a penny more was if I waited over a month for the FOS to review my case and then fight further. But even then, like I said, they are not regulated to use like for like adverts.

It "sounds" fair if the car was just a typical example of a 10 year old 135. This car was immaculate, in one of the best color combinations with a load of great/desirable spec.

Coupled with the near £2.5K spent on it in the 3 months before the theft, the car was easily worth more.

Yep bang on. They know we are desperate and they were very quick to go all in if you will. They handed me their letter of final offer and said take us to the FOS if you wish.

.
Sadly meaningless to an insurer.

Unfortunately you are right.

I think my next high value car I will either be investing in GAP insurance or guaranteed value insurance, whichever comes in better at the time.

Yes back to invoice GAP would take care of the years of care and attention some of us give our cars.

I don't know much about GAP insurance so maybe you could enlighten me?

This "Back to invoice" GAP insurance - If I bought a car from a VAT registered trader/dealer (all legit with sales receipt/invoice etc), and then say 2 years later it got stolen, would they pay the difference between the insurance payout and the invoice price?

Seems odd as the car may have depreciated several thousand pounds, plus the few grand the insurance rob you for.

I guess I sort of understand, you are insuring yourself for x grand in the event of a theft, but it just seems too good to be true?

Just as you have described. You pay extra the cover the Gap between insurance company payout and what you paid

So I did some quotes today on good old compare the market, as I have set my self a goal of an E92 M3 in the next 6-12 months.

Without my theft claim, the premium is £1400, fully comp, £500 excess.

With the theft claim, the premium is £2400, fully comp, £500 excess.

This is just ridiculous. I have already been shorted ~£2K in the payout, and now this!

Both quotes were identical, the only change made was to add the single claim.

Thanks bud, it really is a joke.

Before all this happened, I was looking at £900 to insure the 135 with all the mods declared (they were all cosmetic, not performance).

With it stage 2 I was only looking at £1300
