iDrive Takes Us on a Detour
We were getting set to go to specialty store some 15 miles away, mostly freeway driving. Wife handed me address for Nav. When Nav finished calculating 'fast' route, gave a verbal warning about slow traffic along the route. Last thing I want to do on a sunny Saturday afternoon is sit in traffic. Then I noticed a 'Detour' selection highlighted on the iDrive screen, so I selected it. Nav guided us along a scenic alternate route - one that I would not have thought of. On the way back Nav guided us along the freeway (no slow traffic coming home). Sure enough, could see heavy stop-and-go on the other side of the freeway. iLove iDrive.

If you value your time, Nav is worth the cost. I get detoured two or three times a week with just normal variations in traffic along my route from home to work. RTTI saves me probably over an hour a month on average. For accident avoidence, it can save even more time. And I'm becoming more familiar with a lot of different routes all around the city.

Cool I've used mine once, was a good decision. My only gripe is it pops up the detour screen but there's no Yes/No option if I wanted NOT to take a detour, just "Detour"... I waited for it to go away once but it didn't, so I just hit Menu to get out of that screen and go back to the map.

Got a question. What's the quickest way to cancel route guidance? And how do you cancel POIs?
I've been going to the map screen and clicking the route guidance or the POI icons. But that just disables the feature, how do you cancel it? |

Sometimes, the detour takes you to a bigger log jam LOL... If the freeway is clogged, it may detour you to the city streets. RTTI will not show city street information, so you might end up in a worse parking lot!

Also with Smartdust, Inrix is adding highly localized weather forecasts. I guess some software update will be required so that info can be displayed, maybe overlayed on the map.

My answers involve having the map screen as your current screen: Quickest way to cancel route guidance = move the selector to the very left side bar menu. Scroll to the icon of an arrow with a dot in front of it and select it. This disables the current guidance. Selecting it again re-enables the guidance to the address you were going to. I believe you could also issue a voice command of "Stop Guidance" though I haven't used it personally. Cancel POIs = from the same side bar menu (above) scroll to the "i" icon. This will remove your POIs from showing up on the map. Re-selecting it displays them again. *edit: see the image below, circled in red, items 2 and 4.

I've found that since I got the New GPS installed, and updated to 25.1 that the GPS is much less shitty than it was previously.
It still lags well behind offerings from Garmin, and a couple of others but the RTTI rocks, as does the navigation itself once you actually manage to get the address entered. The Lack of intuition displayed by the system is still comical as it's lack of flexibility... But for a Non touchscreen interface, it's pretty damn good and I am much happier now than I was before. I find myself using just the map function in the assist window more than anything else though, zooming in if I a get disoriented.

I keep my Navi on the map all the time. I love watching it scroll as I drive. Thats the way I had my eclipse set up in my Maxima. I love iDrive

just wondering, if it says theres traffic ahead and then doesn't give you an alternate route does that mean there isn't one or that iDrive isn't working correctly somehow?

By "cancel" I mean where current route guidance or POI displays are simply cleared from memory like they had never been entered. By "disable", I mean toggling it from on to off.

It usually means that the delay due to that traffic is not long enough to warrant a route change.

Quickest way to stop guidance is to hit the voice command button and say "Stop guidance". Works for me!

Love RTTI. Unfortunately it doesn't take HOV lanes into account. Sure there is a lot of traffic on the 405 to LA and it wants me to take 5 but there is an HOV lane the entire way up and that's MUCH faster. I tend to listen to the Nav and let it route me unless I know something it doesn't.

does the idrive traffic work for only highways or does it also work on smaller streets? living in the middle of chicago, there are a lot of random streets i'd like to avoid at certain times, including highways and other streets.
i've tried searching but haven't been able to find much info on the subject. edit: not city streets, but smaller highway-ish streets, such as lakeshore drive in chicago. |

However, if traffic is construction-related, RTTI may report this now - on any street. |

I just got an update to my software (i think i'm on version 26 now or ehatever was right before it because i have POI) but i had a few questions.
Befor the update my display showed TI+ and now it just shows TI. i have routed with it and had dynamic & fast route selected. it routed me to the most obvious freeway but it wasn't that crowded so it could have been ligitimate. Just wondering what the (+) means when next to TI because i can't seem to get mine back. Also, i have never been propted to take altenate route, it will just route me. is that because i am using dynamic routing? 1 last thing, i know its mentioned on other posts but since i'm getting all my questions out anyway - can anyone list a bullet point summary of the changes on th enew software. Like what has changed pre POI option and all the functions to post POI option and all the other updates. Thanks |

It does say that... and re-routes me automatically. I was just wondering if dynamic is what takes it from prompting you (yes or no with needed idrive knob interaction) to having it tell you and auto re-route (no need to push the knob on yes for re-route). which it sounds like it is.
Make sure i have both on? It's been awhile but i don't remember setting up RTTI to be on. it was just on when i got the car but if thats not the case where do i enable it? I know it will only re-route when a destination is selected so that's what i was trying this morning. i will try agin this afternoon but what exactly is the difference between TI & TI+? |
