Red car on a lift warning light - 3 possible causes

Just got a red triangle warning light on the dash. Checked the service info and it shows a red car on a lift symbol. According to the manual there are 3 possible issues: 1. starter failed, 2. starter malfunction (car can only be restarted with the brake depressed) or 3. lighting system failed. Low beams, tail lights and brakes operational, all other systems failed.

It's not #1 because the car starts. I don't think it's #2 because I've started it repeatedly since then and it's totally fine and normal. I've checked every light on the car nothing is burned out. Any ideas before I spend time and money going to the dealer when everything seems fine? Thanks.

"The car is due for a state inspection." is the other reason.

Often you can reset/ignore this.

It means you are due for service or inspection. Go in the service menu and see what is due.

Thanks, I was thinking it could mean that too, since there is a date of 10/2103 listed below. But would it just pop up as a red warning with no prior notice? I would think logically it would let you know with a yellow warning first. When I check the "Service Info" through the stalk on the steering column (no iDrive) this is the only symbol I get, nothing more.

Go in check control menu then hold the BC button. Should display a CC-ID of the problem.. That should point you further to the specific of the problem(s).

I would check the Check Control Menu as said above, but here is a PDF showing all of the check control symbols for the E90...

Thanks guys, I tried that and got a CC-ID 41, "service due." Ha, not very specific. Guess I'll be calling the dealer to find out what it is.

And does the Service Info menu not show what this is? It will either show by time or mileage (whichever comes first)...

Most likely the 30k mile Inspection, aka Vehicle Check. My E91 has the same thing as it was last done (by the previous owner) in October, 2009 and I'm waiting until my next oil change is due in Feb.

Just ignore the warning and have the Inspection done at your next service (it involves about 1 to 2 hours labor), and the dealer will reset the dash when it's completed.
