What causes ignition coils to go bad?
I have been driving around with the low pressure fuel sensor fault for the past 1000-2000 miles. My car randomly started misfiring the other day when I would try to go WOT. I swapped ignition coils and the misfire followed the coil so it seems like the coil has gone bad. Could the faulty low pressure fuel sensor be the cause of this? If not, how else could the coil go bad? I'm only wondering because my car has relatively low mileage. I also haven't heard of many ignition coil failures on this board.

The coils internal resistance keeps increasing with use, if the metal inside has any flaws or imperfections it will ware faster and fail prematurely, that’s why it’s often you have one coil go bad at 40-50K miles but the rest last to 120K

I'm hoping that is the case because I just ordered one. I will try to see if there is any way to inspect the bad one when I replace it.

Well said. Just like any part usage will cause it to wear. The 335i is notorious for faulty coil packs here and there so in this case there is nothing to blame except manufacturers defect. with a high mileage car it's to be expected though. Some Audi's are notorious for literally eating coilpacks sometimes on a monthly basis. If the misfire follows the coil it needs replacement more times then not.

Is the rate of wear on the coils such that it makes sense to replace all six of them at high mileage instead of waiting for them to fail one by one? I was considering doing all of them with my next round of spark plugs because by then the car will be around 80000 miles, tuned since 30000 with meth since 55000. Since I'll be keeping the car for at least the next few years, it seems like it would be easiest to do them preventatively unless it's a waste.

Just replace them as they go, who knows one could make it 50,000 miles and one could make it 10 miles from now

I just replaced all 6 and the car runs like a champ now, no misfires. If you deduce the misfires from coils that are 50k or newer, you might want to find the faulty one. I'm at 82k with originals so I just went ahead an replaced them all in one shot.

Sometimes I'm tempted to do the injectors and the HPFP when I think about doing all of my coils and plugs. If I were to go that far, Terry's in tank Walbro seems like a logical addition too. At that point, might as well do the flash to ramp up the E85%. Damn... this really is a slippery slope isn't it |

the extreme load our engines encounter with larger amounts of boost than stock , more boost = more load which puts more strain on the ignintion system ........ we need a msd version or xyz brand of HD coil

They do but it's hella expensive and I'm not sure they're any better than the stock ones.
