My 2 cents.

I think sooo much of this lag or laziness we feel is directly related to the software adaption in the engine response and transmission response.

Lately my car too is feeling soft or lazy, but the last two plus tank fulls have all been kind gentle miles. However, last month I did an autocross and half way into the day the car WOKE up. For a week or so after the car was just a beast, raw and responsive. Too bad we can't code out some of these adaptions or have a Sport button like the E46 M3 which reverts to raw direct feel.

Yeah I have to say that I also changed my tranny fluid 2 weeks ago. Mine is all smooth too with an exception of last night on normal driving my 2nd or 3rd gear did not engage till about 5k rmps!! My fluid looked ok no viscosity nor metal parts.

Has anyone had this symptoms after changing the tranny fluid?

Did not change mine yet, but what mileage is your car at?

Mine is at 115k miles. Mine feels like is getting better after time passes. I dont notice hard shift anymore, very minimal but only at times. I am still interested in doing the tranny reset adaptation see if it helps.

I changed my fluid at 44k, now car is at 48k. I used Redline D6 with Lubegard Platinum ATF additive (per instructions on Lubegard web site). Lubegard claims their additive eliminates the need to use OEM fluids.

I did not remove the pan. I drained the pan and first refilled to the fill hole. Then, capped it ran the engine and transmission through all the gears for about 3 minutes to try and get some of the old out of the torque converter. Then, drained the pan again and refilled according to the ZF procedure. It took 6 quarts of fresh fluid using this procedure. I have had zero problems with the Redline D6 and Lubegard additive. The drained fluid was a semi-transparent grayish color and smelled fine. I saved it just in case I didn't like the Redline.

The car drives about the same as before, maybe shifts a bit better.

FYI, I did research trying to do a flush of the complete system as seen on youtube for a Honda Civic. I could not find a good place to disconnect the fluid return line.

TDI, I like your way of going about things. You must be an engineer...
Where did you send the oil for analysis and how much did it cost?

Thanks.

There's a big Caterpillar dealership not too far away that has their own lab on site. I buy a 10 pack of sampling kits that include free shipping containers that can be sent through the mail. Last 10 pack purchased was $99.50.

I changed mine at 50k, and then poked hole in trans pan and redoing the whole process again at 52k, the claims adjuster keep trying to tell my mechanic that my trans only took 5 quarts of oil and that's all the insurance would pay for, lol, we had to set them straight.

You know, changing it again will actually be sort of a good thing. You changed before but likely didn't change what was in the torque converter. Then drove 2000 miles and quickly mixed the old and new fluids. Now, changing again and further diluting the old fluid in the torque converter. I've read threads where guys suck all fluid out of pan without dropping pan. Drive for a day and then repeat this process. Then, they drop the pan and changeout and then do the refill again. they were trying to get to as much as "new concentration" as possible. The guy used redline fluid too.

Portable car lift

Sorry for this slightly off-topic question:
TDI, in your post from the first oil-change you're showing a scissor type portable car jack. I'm looking to buy a similar one (BendPak MD-6XP or Auto Lift MR6K-48). What are your complains about it? Is the tranny still reachable or does the scissor obstruct working under the car?

Mine actually did this once, I floored it, the car took off, shifted and then in 3rd gear I think it seemed like it just disengaged, rpm's dropped then it gained power again...about 2 weeks after changing fluids, maybe we had air in their somewhere...

I hope so too... yeah I has not happened ever since. I was thinking about doing the tranny reset adaptation maybe, so it re-adapt to new fluid?

I did that many times, the reset, my car was fine just that one time, then I got in wreck so don't know if it will do it again, I poked a hole in my trans pan, so I did a new service again...

I reset my trans once a week, hopefully with my new tune it will not have to be done again...

Thanks TDI. I have a Michigan CAT dealer right around the corner and picked up a couple of bottles today ($14 each). I'll post my results when done.

out of curiousity I just checked out what a rebuild kit should cost for this transmission. Oregon performance trans has a kit for the 6hp26 and 6HP28 for $234. Listed for RR, Audi, and Jaguar but I cant imagine the kit for BMW is any different. How does a service for $234 + labor sound compared to the $6k that is usually thrown around for a transmission replacement? Looks like it might contain only seals and such though, steels and frictions might be extra

Not sure if this information is helpful, but if I recall correctly when ZF did my transmission maintenance and reset the adaptations they also changed the seals.

Tranny oilchange @ 92500 m

Just finished the maintenance on my transmission and wanted to post some things while I remember them.
Tools needed:
8mm, 10mm Socket
T27 with tamper hole (for panels)
Drain Plug: 10 mm allen wrench (8 Nm, not needed because new sump has it already installed)
Filler Plug: 8mm allen socket (35 Nm)
Sump bolts: T40 (10Nm - be sure to have a torque wrench that goes that low)

I filled about 2.5 liters of Lifeguard 6 oil when it started to poor out, then started engine and got up to 4.5 liters. Had to wait until next day because Tranny was too hot (>50C). Next day shifted through all gears and started filling at 30C and filled up to 5.4 liters until it started to poor out. It kept running with a constant small stream and I caught about 250ml until 40C and then closed up.

Reset adaptions and relearned components for EGS with Rheingold (ISTA). By the way, Rheingold gives you tranny and engine oil temp as well.

Also took some pictures to compare with TDI.
Oil for analysis by MI CAT and a wipe of the magnets. I was surprised on how much material was on them. I guess they did their job...
