Battery Replacement

Hi All

I'm starting to think I may have a battery issue and am on the hunt for a new battery.

The battery in my boot currently has a rating of 900 CCA.
A quick google has given me the following result to buy which would be great since it 'should be' readily available at Autobarn:

https://www.autobarn.com.au/supercharge-battery-el04481

Anyone know if this battery is ok to use - if the dimensions, etc are AOK.

Or, would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to purchase a replacement?

My next issue would be registering it to the car? Do I need to go to BMW for this or where else?
If it isn't registered in the meantime am I able to start/run the car still?

Appreciate any feedback.

I will be up for a new battery shortly, mine is 90AH AGM BMW its about 8yrs old now
Varta is the replacement one around $520 for AGM 95AH from battery places
I think Bosch does one as well.
BMW replaced mine just after I bought the car brand new from 70AH to 90AH.

Hi

I got mine replaced at BMW using an OEM one as I didn't want any problems with my car - why spend $100K on a car and then go cheap on the battery.

My factory fitted original one lasted 7 years.

They supplied, installed and coded for $405.

That's not a bad price, but I'm guessing that's not for an AGM?

Have you tested the battery to check the SoC?

Proper testing of the battery will at least identify the state of the battery before purchasing an unnecessary replacement.

Find a reputable Auto Electrician who has a CCA tester to analyize the battery. If they are using a DMM to test drive away and find someone who knows what they are doing.

Any Johnson Controls battery will be a good replacement if required.

If you have a KDCAN cable handy, we can register/code it for you remotely.

If your original oem bmw battery was white nope lead acid, if it was black its AGM..

By memory it was the later models that had the AGM batteries (cant recall exact year something like 2009-2010)

I got a Delkor LN4 AGM which is an 80AH AGM for around $330. I upgraded from the 77AH "Calcium" model that the car came with, coded the new VO and coded the battery.

AGM battery:

• Dispense charge at a higher rate
• Lose 4% of energy to heat compared with 15-20% of a flooded cell
• Lose 1-3% per month due to self-discharge compared to 1% a day for flooded cell
• Higher expected lifetime
• Are more expensive than a flooded cell
• Require a mode switching charger to limit the current applied

It is not recommended to replace an OEM AGM battery with a flooded cell battery.
A OEM flooded cell battery can safely be replaced with a AGM battery.

Oh wow. Didn't even think to use my NRMA roadside.
I may just get that one as it's the easiest option.

What significance information should I be keeping in mind when going up or down in CCA?

Generally higher = better for cca. Too high is also bad

Note that when rated at 850, the battery is actually putting out about 940 (tested)

Make sure nrma install a 3888 battery. The other are wrong. For an e93 anyway, but even e90/2 is still want the 3888. Best battery nrma have.

Get them to do a battery check on the old, ask for the print off, and do the same post install of new. They also check alternator and starter motor health during this process.

My new one is 90Ah, same as oem Spec. That lasted 7 years. If the new one gets to even half of that I'm happy as I won't have the car after that......

The battery CCA or Ah is going to be limited by the physical dimension of the battery receptacle. As long as you meet the vehicle manufacturers minimum specifications then that is all that is required.

I recall BMW coding tools only have provisions upto 90Ah.
