LPFP options?

My stock LPFP can't keep up with my MHD stage 2+ tune....dropping down to 45psi towards the end of a pull. What are the best options for a new LPFP that will support 500hp (if I ever upgrade turbos)? Looking for something reliable that will last a long time.

Thanks!

Summit Racing seems to have the lowest price from a reputable seller, at least that I found, $101. I bought the install kit and quick disconnect fitting elsewhere.

I just got the precision raceworks stage 2 bucketless, but haven't received it yet. I wanted their stage 2.5, but it was back ordered, but I needed one ASAP so I settled with the stage 2. I'll be running meth so I'm sure both fuel pumps will be happy with hybrid turbos.

Thanks for the links.....that DIY doesn't look all that bad. For saving $200, it might be worth it. Any downsides to the DIY Walbro vs. buying a plug-n-play type setup?

I haven't read about any downsides. It behaves like any bucketless system since you're cutting into the bucket. I went ahead and bought a cheap replacement bucket to use for this DIY so I can hold on to my original as a backup.

How reliable is the DIY route vs. just buying a complete and ready to go Fuel-It Stage-2 setup?

After doing some research…..it sounds like if I just do the DIY Walbro 450 swap into the stock bucket, I will need to run a special hose if I want to run e85? If so….what hose should I run, and where can I get it? And then people talk about clamps coming off…and being stranded on the side of the road?

Is the DIY setup any less reliable than the Fuel-It? Is all of that “clamps will come off, and hoses will break” talk about the DIY way just talk? Or is there some truth in that?

Thanks!

First, I would upgrade the LPFP sensor to the revised version. You can get it on FCP for $35.00

It sounds like your Original LPFP is tired. I was in this same boat about a year ago. I just replaced my LPFP for about $175 or so. Mine reads 82-83 psi driving around and at idol. I never drops below 65psi at WOT.

Vehicular DIY does a nice job upgrading to a stage 2 pump for $150.00. However, you do not need to cut part of the bucket out and essentially or bucket-less. Going bucket-less causes problems, which are documented on this forum.

I would recommend using the kit below, which would allow the filter sock still fit into the OEM bucket and thus negate the need to alter the bottom of the bucket.

Great! So that kit with the Walbro 450 pump...and I should be good to go? I'm assuming I will still need some fittings and extra hose to make it all work?

I've seen a lot of DIY's on there walbro pumps...but it seems like everyone does it a little different, and uses different fittings and hose types.....

It's my understanding that the bucket gets cut for more than one reason. The lesser reason is to make the filter fit, but more importantly it's cut in order to get fuel to the pump. A Walbro 450 won't connect to the factory venturi system that keeps the bucket full. Others have connected T fittings in order to run some of the fuel down to the venturi, but this is where things start to get more complex and possibly failure prone. I've read about a couple people not cutting the buckets and also not connecting to the venturi, but I've read a lot more comments about how this won't work. I look forward to getting all my components and checking this out myself.

I like the setup I saw where the guy cut the bottom of the stock bucket out, and then just used a Black Market Parts walbro fuel pump adapter fitting that allowed the stock quick connect fuel line fitting to hook right up to the new 450 pump.

With the bucketless setup (bottom cut out of stock bucket)......is fuel starvation really an issue if you aren't tracking the car? That looked like a much cleaner install.....and way less things to fail vs. trying to plumb in a T-fitting and use the stock Venturi to fill the bucket.....lots of stuff to come lose and fail over time.

Thoughts??

I'm with you. Cutting the bucket seems like the cleanest install and the least likely to fail as long as fuel starvation isn't an issue. Vehicular DIY has been running this setup for a couple years and hasn't mentioned any issues with it. I don't track my car, but I also don't want to have to worry about keeping my tank above 1/4 full. Another thought I'm toying with is using the stock pump to pump fuel into the bucket while I use the Walbro for normal fuel pump duty. It doesn't seem too complicated to mount the stock pump against the outside of the bucket and drop a hose from it into the bucket. Of course I'd be adding a relay to power the Walbro at this point, so we're getting a little more complicated.

I have read about cars of those who drive spirited and have had issues with a bucketless set up.

I looked at the DIY's that inspired vehicular DIY in his notes. I also liked the videos done by boost concepts.

There is a series of videos on this fork boost concepts

Yep....I'm going to exactly what this guy did. Got my pump, hose, and fittings ordered. I will take a bunch of picks and make a DIY lost if anyone is interested.....

I installed my Walbro 450 today and so far so good! I bought a cheap fuel pump assembly so I could cut it up without feeling too bad while still having my car intact, and I was pleasantly surprised by this $50 eBay special. Instead of the pump mounting brackets being glued to the bucket, they simply snap in place making disassembly much easier. So, I made the crazy decision to not cut the bucket and simply swapped the 450 in. The hardest part of the job was probably getting the lock ring off the tank, but spraying WD-40 through the holes under the tabs made it much easier for my hammer and screwdriver approach. Anyhow, I drove to the gas station with my gas light on and put full e85 in the tank for the first time. And then my engine cut off on my first hard pull on the interstate. Unsurprisingly, the fuse for the fuel pump had blown. I replaced the 20A fuse with a 25A one and went out for some more pulls and logging. Everything looks good to me. Before when I was running between e40 and e50, my LPFP would dip into the 40's during a pull. Now on full e85 it doesn't dip below 60. I'm satisfied. Here's a 3rd gear pull from tonight:

Nice! I've been considering doing this a kinda a preventative maint thing. But if it's possable to out run the stocker on. Just mhd 2+ then it just move up to a must do. I'm gonna be running 2+ after I do my down pipes and relocated inlets

You blew the 20a fuse? Those pumps are only supposed to pull 16amps max. I think the fuel pump controller should shut off at 18a......you might want to put a 20a fuse back in......it's protecting other components.

Never heard of a Walbro 450 blowing a fuse..strange.

Got any pictures of that eBay assembly and how you installed the pump?

Is the Walbro 450 your only fueling mod, and you're now running full E85? I thought the fuel line had to be replaced because high ethanol content breaks it down, and additional fueling mods were needed for full E.

Ah..I missed that part. With full e85 that pump is giving it all it's got to flow enough fuel. No wonder the fuse popped.

I would keep an eye on your fuel pump controller..... probably not long before it can't handle the high amp draw either.
