Fueling Issue - Turbos?
Just trying to nail down any final issues before I pull the $2000.00 trigger on a new set of turbos.
I'm not getting any codes at all related to fuel or low pressure fuel pump etc. I only get a 30ff code that says low inlet pressure on turbos. Basically, no boost. I just wondering if a faulty low pressure fuel sensor could be miss leading me? It doesn't hesitate at WOT; I can run it to 7000rpm's in park and not even pop the 30ff code. I can only pop the 30ff code in drive and over 4000 rpm. The car still pulls after the code despite the 1/2 engine light. I've checked all the connections in the intake system and the outlets too. They are all secure. I even bought new green gaskets for the FMIC. New turbo boost solenoids & new MAP sensors for the intake manifold & charge pipe. I'm going to do a smoke test tonight, or tomorrow morning. I found a link to an attachment for $30.00 that would allow one to do a pressure test. I might buy it, and make the pressure test my last straw. http://www.siliconeintakes.com/intak...ter-p-167.html You can buy it on Amazon too. So, do you think a fueling issue could be an issue? I'm 95% sure it's not. That's because I don't have any code that says so. Please Advise.. |

I believe my OEM turbos on my N54 motor are toast. They have 163,000 miles on them.
The N54 has two turbos, if you recall. I put MHD tune on it, and I'm only getting 8psi boost on a good day. Most times I'm getting less then 6psi. I'm supposed to get 15-17psi. The car has the following bolt on's 1) 1.75" silicone inlets 2) 2" silicone outlets 3) 3" catless downpipes 4) 2ndary cat delete - HF Resonators in their place 5) AFE Momentum CAI box 6) 1 step NKG colder plugs 7) Eldor coils 8) 5" stepped FMIC 9) Rob Beck upgraded PCV valve 10) Mishimoto catch can 11) Upgraded silicone, platinum cured vac lines I did a walnut blast in April. I've done the following: New boost sensors New MAP sensors Tightened down the wastegates both manually & with software. New Gaskets in FMIC connections Checked all connections along intake track. The software wastegate fix seemed to help a little. The car can be run to 7000rom and not blow one code. You don't hear any excessive air leak etc. Drive it and you get a different story. You get 1/2 engine light and 30ff code above 4000 rpm when going WOT. The car still pulls though and power isn't really cut. Weird. You can also hear a lot of air movement like a whooshing sound in the cabin where the turbos would be on the other side of the firewall. I have several diagnostic tools and software. INPA, ISTA D & P, Carly etc. I'm not an expert with this software, but am reasonably familiar with them and can figure out stuff by researching forums on how to better use it. The only code I get is the 30ff code - low air pressure at turbo intake. I'm going to do a smoke test today/ tomorrow to see what that might reveal. |

Did a smoke test on the engine. I bought a stinger brand smoke leak tester on Amazon.
It has 91% of the reviews being 5 stars. Well, it didn't disappoint. It makes a lot of smoke in a very short amount of time. I found a leak in the system. The silicone outlet on the front turbo had popped off!!! Nothing on the inlet side had even a remote leak. I remounted the outlet and bingo! I had instant boost. I have since ordered a VRSF aluminum 2" outlet. I did this because I don't want to have this problem again. This product mounts with a V clamp, so, no way it's popping off. So, still on stock turbos for now ! I will be upgrading to RB stage 1 turbos when the stock ones finally go, but for now there's no sense dropping $1700 if I don't have too. I did buy a quick jack, and it was delivered Friday. Set up was easy pleasey. All I can say is WOW! You have soooo much room under there now. There's no question you could drop the Tranny and do a rear main seal DIY. My car is lowered, and it still fits under the car. |

Glad you got it fixed without spending money on new Turbos. I might have to get the smoke tester just to have it.

At any rate, I have a VRSF 2" aluminum outlet coming. It will be here Thursday. I'll probably install it Friday. I didn't like how the outlet installed on the front turbo when I put it back on. At some point, I think it will just pop back off. I'm on stage 1+ and I'm making 17.8psi of boost at around 4000 rpm and about 440# or torque. I haven't opened her at WOT, for fear of the outlet popping off again.. |

Yeah idk how I feel about outlets. I have relocated inlets and the rear one can be a bitch, I can only imagine the same for silicone outlets. Good to know your turbos are still holding up after so many miles though. |
