Code in bluetooth calling?

I have a 2009 E92 M3 that has iPod/USB and iDrive with Voice Command but does not have BMW Assist or bluetooth hands free calling. I'd really like to be able to take phone calls via bluetooth.

I'm wondering if there is any chance it is possible to retrofit bluetooth calling capability via coding alone? It seems like the car maybe already has the necessary hardware? There is obviously a microphone for the voice commands it can take for navigating various things in iDrive (is that the same normally used for calls?) and it seems to have the MULF2 module necessary for iPod/USB, which as I understand also handles bluetooth, at least in some cases. I looked in the trunk to find it and see the bluetooth logo on it. Of course the car also has a non-functioning telephone button on the steering wheel.

Maybe getting bluetooth calling might just be a matter of adding something ($6ND possibly) to the VO and coding one or more modules to defaults?

Forgive me as I am not an expert in coding and such but I do have a little bit of experience as I was able to successfully retrofit M-Drive and perform the coding for that.

You can certainly try adding to the VO and seeing what works - I doubt it'll cause any major issues and you can always go back.

Only issue I can think of is that you may not have the bluetooth antenna (shark fin possibly, I may be wrong).

$633 is the option I have on my car, although mine has a combox so this might be different.

Other forum posts talk about option $644.

If you can't get it to work, search for guides on how to retrofit a MULF as this might give you clues as to any parts you're missing.

bluetooth antenna is located under the dash on the driver side, and since OP already has MULF he definitely have the antenna and with the voice assistant he has a microphone.
the only thing I would be getting is a loud speaker next to the bluetooth antenna that you need for phone calls

On my E92 with combox, the bluetooth telephone audio comes out of the main speakers. Is this extra speaker only needed with the MULF then?

the speaker I was referring to is 65 13 6 938 657

this was one of the parts listed in the instruction I followed to retrofit bluetooth handsfree calling here

given how OP's car is optioned, I believe as far as hardware is concerned this is the only thing missing, of course OP is welcome to try it without the speaker.

As far as I know mulf and tcu are just different modules you can use to achieve the same factory style bluetooth calling, they both require bluetooth antenna, microphone and speaker

Only the 06 used and extra speaker for the gongs and alarms , at least in the US
And some of the 06's didn't use it depending on how they were outfitted.
