Xenon/HID kits for E90
Hi all
Thinking to get a pair of HID kits for my E90, saw this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....ht_8698wt_1139 They claim this kits are specifically designed for BMW E90 3 series. Quote:

I got a pair of these a couple of months ago - so far so good.. The HID light output is so much brighter and better than standard..
They're easy to fit, neat and no modifications required. From the fitment I believe It's specifically designed E90 3 series. FYI the seller posts the item pretty quick as well.. Charlie Last edited by xxx7; 09-28-2010 at 07:03 AM.. |

Many people fit HID lights to halogen reflector enclosures; sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.
The usual problem is stray light, which is a lot brighter than a halogen bulb, blinding other drivers and attracting the attention of the police, who can give your car a defect notice. |

I must say... that is a very cool little set-up!!
It does cost twice as much as others, but I love how the ballast is integrated into the dust cover. The HID kit I used for my other car looked like the image at the bottom of that page where it says "NO" hahaha, and plus I had to do a bit of chopping and drilling. You will definately annoy the shit out of drivers in front of you if you don't have the projecter style headlights, but hey... it looks fkn great from your end

this kits won't work with any aftermarket projector headlights as it is designed for the factory headlights.
anyone interested in a group buy? i might able to get some discount from the seller if we buy it together. otherwise i'll place an order for a pair soon. xxx7: thanks for your feedback. do you have any photos? how does it perform at night-time driving? |

Each to their own, but imho it will make your expensive BMW look like a Japanese Ricer.
Plus attract the attention of the police, who will give you a defect notice. |

The design of the HID kit (ballast being integrated in the dust cover) is what really influenced me to buy them.
I had PIAA HID's in my previous car and the HID's I have now perform just as well. At night they're very good/bright and Ive yet to cop any high beams from other drivers.. Ill post some photo's over the weekend if I get a chance.. |

I haven't looked at this specific set, but often the colour temperature is a lot higher than a halogen bulb = ricer and they spray stray light everywhere = ricer.
There may be some HID conversions which are good and I just don't notice, but usually if I get blinded or distracted by blueish too bright headlights they are poor quality HID conversions. |

Don't worry you're in London anyway so im one less "ricer" Beamer you have to worry about.. |

Often it won't even look better on your end. If you have a halogen surround in your headlight, not the projector, the light output is far worse.
HIDs are designed for a projector setup, not a 'reflector'. Got a pic of your headlights? Are can you tell us if it has factory projectors or a reflector based bowl design? Some of those depo projectors aren't even that great projectors - as in the projector itself is of average quality and you suffer 'hot and cold' spots in the light output on the road. I have retrofitted a good quality set of projectors into depo headlights before ordered from this site http://www.theretrofitsource.com/ You've also gotta consider the different bulbs going in - often a 'HID Bulb' with a H7 base isn't the same as a factory D2S bulb. |

I received my HID kit yesterday and fitted them on my E90 last night. looks great! installation was okay, took me about an hour as it was quite difficult to put the cover back with all the extra wirings and the ballast. one thing i notice this morning was that the left HID low bean doesn't come on if i switch on the automatic headlight function (i.e. left switch to A). however once i've switched to low beam (i.e. setting 1), both headlights will come on. do you have the same problem? I don't think this is normal at all. Both headlights should come on at the same time regardless whether it is in Automatic mode or Low Bean mode. any help is appreciated! cheers leon Last edited by Ninjaoz; 10-05-2010 at 06:16 PM.. |

Installing the first HID took about half an hour but that's because I didn't take the front wheel off (the instructions provided are for 17inch wheels).. When I took the wheel off the right HID took literally 3 minutes to install.. As for it being difficult to put the cover back on, did you put all the wires etc inside the headlight or cramp it all in the cover? If its all cramped in the cover this maybe what's causing the malfunction as mine both switch on regardless of the light mode (I've put all the wires etc inside the headlamp); or it maybe a loose connection? BTW - I didn't get a chance to post up photo's. If you still want to see them send us your email address - its easier.. |

well i sorta cramped all the wires inside the cover, how did you manage to put the wires inside the headlight? believe me it is relatively tight!
anyhow strangely enough it is working perfectly fine now, i turned on and off about a dozen times in automatic mode, both headlights came on. i might swap the ballast from left to right if it happens again. thanks mate |

The last step in the instructions provided shows the wires etc going down straight after the HID bulb in the headlight, then the cover goes on.
If everything is cramped into the cover (ballast, wires), I'm worried it might get to hot and melt the wiring - as it all sits directly behind the HID bulb when the cover is placed on. It's good to hear all works fine though. |
