Auto Cross and etc can void warranty??!?!?!

I was informed that many mitsubishi EVO owners' warranties were voided due to auto cross. It was said that by registering for auto cross, the auto cross sends the information to the dealership, which leads the dealer to void the warranties of many EVO owners. Could this happen to our bimmers?

+1, not sure if they can prove you were on auto cross for warranty.. but definitely say bye bye to insurance when you're on the track. I remember reading some one had a E46 M3 that got trashed by some ass on the track.. no coverage.

Auto ex can because it's a timed event. Drivers education does not.

go out and have fun and drive safely. autocross events are too small where they're not going to have a BMW rep taking down all the BMW VIN numbers to blackball on their warranty list.

do this:
call up your insurance company and tell them you are going to:
1. auto-cross at XXX location
or
2. drag strip at XXX location

tell me how long it takes for them to cancel your policy in seconds.

just try it then tell them you were only joking.

I'm curious if all insurance companies are the same, so let me know what they say!

You guys really need to read your warranty. Altering your odometer, obscuring your VIN, or participating in any competitive event will void your warranty.

I would be shocked if you go to a BMW car club event auto cross or even one of their mellow track days and get screwed.

BMW does not void warranty on auto-xed cars. BMW CCA actively sponsors auto-x events and it's a big part of brand success. The story of about Mitsu has been around for over a year now and it's only limited to them.

They won't cancel the policy. They simply deny the claim and all out of pocket expenses will be paid out of the policy holders pocket. Legally the insurance carrier has 60 days from the policy's effective date to cancel a policy due to underwriting reasons. After that, they can not. But they can deny claims if they fall outside normal driving practices.

I don't see how Auto-X or Drag strips can void your warranty on a BMW.

Isn't the motto or saying for BMW something along the lines of being driven to its limits? Don't quote me, but I'm sure they have some saying that says "drive this.... and have fun"

To my understanding, neither BMW nor an insurance company will "void" your warranty or policy (meaning that you are no longer covered for anything).

However, in both cases, I know that they will NOT cover any issues you have with your car that result from the event, whether it's an accident or any issues arising from the higher-than-normal stresses of competition driving.

This is the operative clause in the US warranty (emphasis mine):

This warranty shall be null and void if the vehicle identification number has been altered or cannot be read, if the odometer has been replaced or altered and the true mileage cannot be determined, if the vehicle has been declared a total loss or sold for salvage purposes, or if the vehicle has been used in any competitive event.

I agree... also, in NC we are lucky to have the NC department of insurance come up with a law stating that there are NO exclusions when it comes to insurance coverage, which means that we are also covered at the track for HDPE events.

Oh yeah..they automatically upload the registration files for autocross events directly to a database maintained by Mitsubishi...and they immediate void your entire warranty.

NOT.

Yes, I have heard of Mitsubishi dealerships looking up results on SCCA websites for people who competed in "timed" autocross events...and then subsequently creating havoc for a number of Evo owners...but this has been blown up a bit larger than it really is.
