Update

Swapped the new OEM (88c) thermostat in and coolant temps are right where they're supposed to be! I'm seeing 190-195*F in town and on the hwy. Temp checked via Carly.

So if we are running 175 degrees/F time for a new thermostat?

I thought it was abc related. But if 195 is where we need to be id like to replace it as well!

^ Yes, I'd change it out.

What external wastegate are you using? I'm experiencing overboost in certain situations.

Not sure to whom this question was directed, but I've been using one of these for over 2 years.

More info on wastegate mods/options can be found in this old thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1074384

I've read several followup accounts of the new thermostat helping temps initially, but it doesn't seem to take too long before it weakens and coolant temps get a little low again (more of a problem on deleted cars). But the number of people who post followups months later is very low.
Okay, I'll provide a follow up. Its been about 12 months since I swapped coolant system T/S out. I don't have my info with me so I can't provide miles driven. My guess is ~ 7000 miles at most. My T/S read 85-86C is sitting in garage idling with it fully warmed up. I drove this weekend and Carly told me I was running about 83C while on freeway and cruising normal speed (70-75) with normal Houston weather of about 65-70F. After getting back home, and parked in garage temp warmed a hair bit back to about 85C. Essentially no degradation so far but my miles are low. If I had to try to recall what the "running down the road" temp was back then, my guess is ~84-85C. So, the driving temp has dropped but only about 2C. There is another T/S thread and I recall posting so maybe my cruising temp after replacement is stored there. I will update this if/when I find the correction.

im actually not too "far" from where you live (clear lake).. im in cypress... my coolant runs a constant 85-86C while driving, so it seems like we see the same temps....

About 50 miles. Sounds like you are deleted too if below 88C. Presume you changed T/S too if still that high. How long ago/miles ago?

Do you remember what your temps were running like before the T/S change a year ago. Also, I've seen multiple posts with people debating whether there was any change in mpg after the swap. Did you notice any increase in mpg in the 12 months since the changed?

My coolant was at 76c pre swap. I have noticed no mpg change since before swap. I'm not convinced coolant temp correlates to mileage but have remained quiet on this topic. I say this but at some point a threshold temp may become a decreasing mileage factor. I wouldn't want to run too cool for oil temp reasons related to turbo being feed too cool oil.

EDIT: Yes, if your coolant is running high 60's/low 70's, you are in need of a new one. I will not pull the trigger quite as early as last time. I didn't have the benefit of others temps info in terms of slow degradation over time. I'm think ing low 70s will be my jumping point next time around but flexible as I continue to hear about others' experiences.

Will be replacing mine in the next week, so was just wondering if I would see any change. I'm running in the high 60s/low 70s right now though.

TDI - it was directed to whomever had a solution. Do you have more details on how you mounted the wastegate? Does it mount directly to or with a fabricated adapter to the exhaust manifold area that usually lead to the EGR cooler?

Can I ask the reason for the external wastegate, and what does it sound like?

Some pics here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...14&postcount=3

I originally reused the flex section of the EGR cooler routing (what's in the pic), but it eventually cracked. Replaced with solid pipe section after that happened.
