before i get flamed, i am not happy for - nor am i referring to - the manufacturers and exporters will suffer as a result of this rapid appreciation of the $C, but i referring to the IMPORTERS and i'm happy because they will need to do something real meaningful real soon....

actually my bad.. it's not quite 1.06 yet (it was over 1.06 according to the quote i got somewhere else).. it's 1.0585 according to the Bank of Canada link that i included....

I bet more than a couple NHLers on Canadian teams are calling their union rep crying about not being paid in CAD.

I know a number of people in Vancouver who work in the movie business, primarily on US productions for which they get paid USD. They are getting it from both sides -- it's less attractive to shoot in Canada, and what work there is is less lucrative than it used to be. If it wasn't for the impending strike and the panic to get stuff made before next year, I think we'd see a fraction of the production work happening here vs. the US.

It's funny, I have a few friends who went to work in the US a few years back taking pay packages that were sometimes 50% more in Canadian dollar terms. One used to have this funny line about coming up to Canada for a few days and "crushing us with his greenbacks". Haven't heard him say that in a while.

This is so awesome. We are due to buy a new taxi in a month or two's time. Hello 2006-2008 Impala SS (V8). Bitchin Taxi, eh?

Save upwards of $10-15k, plus warranty doesn't mean shit because we'll blow through 80,000km in like six months anyways.

Chrysler reduced prices today!

From the National Post
"Chrysler said it will boost cash incentives across its product lineup. To take two examples, the incentives on its 2008 Grand Caravan minivans will increase to $2,250 from $1,000 in October, and incentives on its 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee will nearly double, from $5,500 to $10,750."

Can BMW be very far behind?

True, but these cars weigh in at a high number and we also drive them frequently with 5 passengers + luggage... Horsepower is necessary. Further to that, towards the second half of their life in a taxi, engines/trannies really start to get bogged down and weak, to the point where steep hills are a challenge. Again, having more horsepower/torque in the first place will help prolong this downward phase as cabs are all about longevity. Plus Displacement on Demand is just awesome, switching between 4/8 cylinders will be great for switching between stop and go downtown downtown and long-haul night trips to the suburbs.

Nah... They just make crappy cars.

Have you noticed that not too many of their cars make it through more than one generation life cycle? PT Cruiser, Pacifica, HHR

Now look at the Civic or Accord. They have been around since the mid 70s and are on it's 8th generation.

Thread title will have to be changed to $CAD tops $1.07 US.

Time to move out of Canada again until the dollar comes back down to reality.
