Hi all,

I have a 2009/07 335i xDrive e90. The transmission has failed and I'm installing a used 6PH19 transmission from a 2011/04 car.

There is conflicting information on this forum and others about whether re-coding is necessary due to a mismatched VIN in the mechatronics unit.

Do I need to swap my existing mechatronics unit onto the "new" valvebody? Is it better to have someone code this for me? I have the standard toolset (INPA, WinFKP, K+DCAN, etc.), but I'm not familiar with what needs to happen to code the VIN no. on the new trans, for instance, does the new VIN need to be written to a module in MY vehicle, or does my current car's VIN need to be written onto the new mechatronics unit?

Either looking for some resources to get started and learn myself, or if anyone is familiar with this procedure and can do it remotely, I'd be happy to pay $$. Thanks!

I believe you are supposed to swap your mechatronic unit into the "new" used tranny.

Got it. I am intimately familiar with that process, as I just replaced all seals and solenoids in an attempt to remedy a 4-5 shift slip. Should be fun times!

I am reading that it is * possible * to rewrite the VIN in the EGS module to match my car's VIN with NCSExpert, but I'm worried that I'd mess something up. Need to spend some time learning how to use the software if I attempt that.

You can program a used e9x transmission mechatronics to your car. On 8hp e chassis and all F chassis transmission requires changes ISN on mechatronics to match DME or CAS/BDC/FEM. This would not apply to your car though

I've done the same job on my 2007/08, it's been a number of years now trouble free. In my case the replacement was from a 2011/04 which is a couple of months shy of the most recent compatible transmission for my car.

LQK provided photos and the VIN from the donor car, which had 67,000 Kms. I asked the rep for the photos and other information before I said anything about the price. I also mentioned to him I would see the VIN in the EGS once I connected the tranny, in the end he gave me a great price because they rarely sell. I also purchased the CarFax for the donor vehicle.

My understanding is the 2011 6HP19 is in fact referred to by BMW as the 6H19TU (Technical Update) but referred to by ZF as the 6HP21.

Once my tranny was installed I connected with WinFKP I verified the VIN and used the following to update the VIN. I cannot verify if this process is required or not but if you have the tools to do it, you should do it. Use at your own risk.

1-Start WinKFP
2-Select F1(Comfort Mode)
3-Select F3(Update ZUSB)
4-Find and select the ECU that you wish to update/update
Select the EGS or Electronic Gear Shift
5-Select F3(enter vin)
6-Type in car Vin
7-Select OK
8-Select F8(Done)
9-Select F3(Prog.ZB-update)
10-Confirm at own risk

If you have verified that the 2011/04 is compatible with your 2009 then the Mechatronics unit does not need to be replaced, just update the VIN. Expect the dash to light the 4 X 4 error message for the first few drive cycles.

Thank you so much for the detailed steps. Funny enough, I am purchasing from LKQ as well, however the rep that I am dealing with seems to be quite incompetent compared to the one you spoke with

I will update this thread when I begin installing the trans with any questions and results. Thanks again.

this thread is very helpful almost done with swapping in a new trans into my 335i. programming the module is next on the list

Speaking from my personal experience, I had a 2009 335i Xdrive. Big single turbo car running 28-30psi and the stock trans gave out. I bought a complete pull out trans and transfer case out of a 2011, swapped in, never coded anything or swapped modules and had 0 issues

Coming back to update this thread:

The transmission install went smoothly. We hooked up the mechatronics unit to the connector, and immediately got a fault code for "5087, touch or M gate switch".

So, essentially the mechatronics unit in the new transmission was coded for paddle shift, whereas my car is non-sport package and doesn't have paddle shifters. We had to change the VIN in the transmission module so that we could code this feature off. I had another member "bmwttftw" program the module for me remotely, and they did an excellent job.

The car is running smoothly and the new transmission is solid.

I think that if you are installing another transmission with 100% matching features, no coding would be necessary. However if you need to alter any of the features on the new trans' mechatronics unit, you may need to re-code the vin to match your ECU.
