Lesson #124 - Remove key before oil changes

Hi all,

wanted to share a little trick.

at 1800 miles I decided to change the oil used to break-in the car. I went with the Mobil 1 - 0w40.

Lifted the car, unscrewed the oil plug, and the oil SPRAYED out of the car like it was an aerosol can. Thankfully my brain cells gathered up quickly and I realized that the key was inserted. Now this car is not advertised as a dry sump vehicle but there must be a some kind of a pump (oil pump) that attempts to lubricate the motor as soon as you insert the key. As soon as I removed the key the oil flow turned into a normal stream just as expected to come out of an oil pan.

If you are more concerned with getting every last drop of old oil out you can drain most of the oil, and then stick the key in, and even turn the engine over. The problem with this is when you start the engine with the new oil, it will take a little while for the oil pump to fill. It's usually OK if you do all this fairly quickly and there is still some residual oil lubricating during the first few revolutions.

You only have to touch the car. You don't need to insert the key to get sprayed with oil.

Also an addition to my lesson - No dipstick sucks a$$ big time. Having to start the engine each time to check the level is retardecious!

I'd imagine that having a little old oil in the engine is far less damaging than what could happen from starting an engine without ANY oil.

Gives me shivers thinking about turbos spinning without oil..

Never ever do this. Oil is no longer just a lubricating agent to the engine, it's part of the engine. there are a lot of hydralic components that rely on the oil being present to function properly.

The oil pump is mechanical not electric, only the water pump is electric

Only thing I can think of is the crankcase ventalation

The 335i uses a special 2 stage crank case ventalation because of the turbo's.

All I can think is becuase you ran it, but didnt remove the key, some of the valves were still closed and a positive pressure was present in the system, pushing out the oil.

Removing the key probably makes the system open all the valves, releaving any pressure

This was an interesting thread, never would have thought of it. Maybe with CA keep the key out of range? Also, I wondered how the oil in the cooler would come out, it doesn't seem like it would go out the drain plug as the hoses go up to the filter...
