Oil question.
Ok I did my oil change on my e90 335i this past weekend. I change my oil right before 3k miles, around 2,500 miles. I know BMW says to wait til like 15k or 10k. I like to change it early, better safe than sorry, oil is cheaper than buying an engine. My questions are 1. Has anyone ever looked at how dirty the oil is just at 3k? 2. Is it really safe to take the oil to 15k?
This is the condition of my oil at 2,800 miles It was worse the last time I did it. |

I've followed this on everything from a Civic to a BMW and have never been let down. OEM Oil Filter with a good oil and your car will be happy! |

lol
you should be doing oil changes about every ~7,000 miles. Or if you track your car, then more frequently. BMW stated 15K miles b/c of "synthetic oil" is baloney. See how much sludge build up there is...

I change every 7k. I feel nervous about letting the car go to 15k

I think I'll stick to 3k, i'm a service writer I see it all the time. By the time they get to 10k or 15k there is only 1 quart left. 7k=3 quarts just my opinion.

10-15k only benefit BMW to cushion the blow of the free maintenance, and at an average of 10k a year by the time your free maintenance is up BMW only paid for 3 oil changes. BMW is about the bidness

What I do is have BMW pay for the oil change at ~15K intervals, then I pay for the ones in between at ~7K intervals.

exactly. So i'll drive ~7K miles, and BMW will pay for it under the maintenance plan, then i'll drive another ~7K miles and I'll pay for the oil change and thus alternate every ~7K miles.

That just looks like regular, cycled engine oil. It will look "dirty" after running the engine for just 100 miles. Engine oil gets dirty by doing its job. No need to worry unless it's red, green, or sludgy.
