transmission issue - wont go past 2nd gear

I've had this happen to me twice. Driving down the street, mat the gas pedal and the transmission goes into some kind of limp mode. Wont go past 2nd gear and a 'gear' warning like similar to the 'settings' icon on cell phones pops up.

I stop the car, start again and it's good to go again.

Anyone have same experience?

I've recently swapped out the pump due to broken tooth on the torque tube. And replaced trans oil pan with new gasket and fluid top up. The procedure well document on youtube. Empty fluid, drop pan part way, let most of the juice out, then pull pan off, replace with new gasket, reinstall, retorque. Top up fluid with car off, start up and get warm and then top up until juice comes out of drain hole again. Done this a couple time now. On level ground..

Using amzoil dexron vi, had to mix in a little castrol transmax dex vi...

You did all the right things so far. The only thing I'd recommend before replacing the valves is replacing the rubber tubes between mechatronic unit and housing. Replace the connector as well while you're at it. They start leaking fluid sooner or later.
Question: Why the mix of other fluids rather than using the ZF fluid?

Did you reset adaptions? What's your mileage? Is this your first trans service?

@mik the mech sleeve tubes are original though it never leaked prior to me opening up and swapping a couple parts out. Can this be done now that the trans is all back in in?
I mixed the amzoil with a bit of transmax dex vi as i was able to get from napa close to home. I seldom go near dealerships. It was a complete refresh of trans fluid so i read that the amzoil more than adequate.

@ rl18 i did not reset adaptations. I have the ista and will do it... and this was part of a transmission swap of parts. i busted the pump so needed to replace.

There's also a mechatronic allignement proceedure you can try to run. But I think it is only available in ISTA.
The sleeve and the rubber tubes can all be changed with the transmission installed. You just need to drop the valvebody.

Don't use dex vi! It's not even close to the friction characteristics needed.
, you can use redline d4/d6, mercon sp or zf lg6.

so i found a small leak.. i had replaced the trans oil pan with the one i got with the donor transmission. it was marked a 2016 so figured it's about 7 years newer than my 2009. When i look a little closer, the rubber gasket to the plastic drain plug was missing. also replaced the rubber gasket with new. meantime it's been fine except once when my kid matted the throttle and the gear light came on and trans would not shift past 2nd... even in manual or sport mode. pulled over to the side, stopped the car. turned back on and good to go. problem was it's dangerous. he was doing 100 kms or more on a main highway...
