LOL, they chose the N54 because of it's tuning potential and they had to get rid of their stock due to the switch to the N55. The next M3 is based on the N55. That should tell you something. Also, it might sound like I'm taking shots at the N54, I'm not. I just consider the N55 to be a better engine. I absolutely adore the 1M and 335is.

Turbos and wastegates should be covered by the BMW CPO. $50 copay and you'll get new turbos. I had three dealership service departments confirm that. I'm living with the rattle for now.

unless you have a tune piggy pack flopping around the engine when you brought it in.

Mine was rattling pre 82k too. Got an '07. Few in that year have less than 82k miles. I am about at 88k too. Will be writing to BMWNA soon. I have heard that this may help even though we are technically outside the limit. Mine isn't rattling super bad, but I don't imagine it will get any better on its own.

Well, the next M3 will use a very heavily modified N55 (S55?) because the N54 is ,as you pointed out, close to it's end of life and the N55 is more efficient.

The M division will extensively rework the N55 before they claim it as a 'performance engine'. The fact that the N54 is a forged engine block probably had something to do with it's selection for the 1M.

Your post actually supports everything he said in his context. The M division obviously focuses on power, which the N54 has more of when tuned, not reliability, as his entire point was.

Does anyone know what to do if I've already done the repair ? I would assume they should reimburse people who already paid to have it fixed.

I did this back in January....so mad. It cost me $2500

Please read the PDF in the first post which contains the entire service bulletin. It says 50 states.

Soo.. Let me get this straight.. We can blow a snail due to over boosting with our BMS/ COBB tunes, (granted, it's and extreme scenario), tow our cars to our local dealerships and get a new set of snails?!? for free?!

Does anyone know when they will send us a letter in the mail stating this so we have documentation? I ask because this was the main reason I bought an extended warranty to cover the turbos but if they are covered through this I will cancel and get my money back

Based on the bulletin, it doesn't look like it. Curious... since it's the same engine...

I know 1seriesstud had his replaced under warranty though, but then got rid of his 1M anyway because he didn't want to deal with any more surprises that were supposed to be fixed by BMW.

or

3. it'll just rattle/break and then cause under/overboost.

some people got new turbos with the new wastegate rods, some like me, just got the wastegate rod fixed. The new wastegate rods are of thicker design. So far, they are holding up great and I got no death rattle.

Thanks for the info!

I wouldn't be so quick to cancel that extended warranty unless you feel that you won't use it. Remember the extended warranty will go to 100k miles or 10 years the Turbo is only 82k and 8 years which is standard Emissions and should have been covered to begin with.

Wish me luck, car goes in tomorrow ^^

Good luck! Main reason I got the warranty is because of possible turbo failure since that is the most costly to repair and now that it is covered I feel like I should dump the extended. It is a third party warranty that only covers my 335 to 2015 or 86k miles which ever comes first so it doesn't go up to 100 either. Third thing is I don't really have a waste gate rattle but am pretty sure my turbos are going as there is a good amount of soot buildup on my tailpipes, I have felt more lag since I got it and my buddy said he could see a white puff of smoke when I accelerated hard which could mean the turbos are slowly going all that combined with the fact that I have had to add a quart of oil each month and a half because the low oil light that came on. Called the dealer today and they said they have to be able to replicate the problem, so my question to you is how do you replicate turbo failure if the waste gate is not rattling?

I'm sorry to burst your bubble but it's been documented and confirmed only the early N54(06 build year) have forged cranks, rods, and pistons. They switched to cast in '07. So, the 1M does NOT have forged internals. Also, unless you're trying to push 500+ whp, forged internals are not beneficial.

Well I wish this news would have come sooner... My car just went over 50,000 miles and I bought an extended warranty..And the only reason I bought the EWarranty was because of turbos. Oh well.
