Hawk HPS 5.0 + Aftermarket Rotors
Was looking to change out my brake pads and rotors soon for my e92 328i and was looking at the Hawk HPS 5.0 as well as the Brembo blank rotors. Looking at the Hawk website it says the pads are not compatible with carbon ceramic rotors and only iron/metal rotors. Looking at Brembo's site it says their rotors are high carbon so I'm guessing that's out of the question?
Does anyone know what the stock rotors are made of? Should I just be going with stock rotors if going with the HPS 5.0 pads? |

Search google on what carbon ceramic brakes are. You will see they are way different.

You will be fine with standard rotors. Currently I have Hawk 5.0 and zimmerman flat rotors up front and rear. I have done 4 track days with this set up with braking from 140-60 and no issues. Only on really hot days >90f the pads get a little spongy towards the end of a 20 minute session, or on really short small tracks where you cant get proper airflow for cooling.
Be prepared for a lot of dust with the 5.0's |

Trust me, you don't have carbon ceramic rotors they are $$$$$ and are only an option on supercars. |

No noise out of 5.0 pads here...as Jeff mentioned though, these pads might be slightly overkill for a street-only car; then again, having slightly more aggressive pads might lower the chance of pad deposits, but that's just a theory I haven't fully researched yet.

I have the 5.0 and they are great.
Initial bite is not the same from dead cold start as OEM pads. It will require 1~2 brake pedal presses to slightly warm them up and then they bite down hard. Less dust than OEM. There is a bit of noise during bedding process but no squeak's. If you do your pad break in process at night, you will see lots of sparks |
