So what is the replaceable valve at the back of the valve cover under that fuel line? I just ordered on online. Is it not worth replacing?

That’s the PCV valve. I just ordered a new one today. It’s an item that doesn’t hurt to swap out as a part of regular maintenance, you don’t want to have one in there leaking. I went with a stronger Vargas unit as I already had everything tore apart and wanted a fresh baseline after my walnut blast.

Ok thought it was the only one. There's a shop near me that does the walnut blasting, I will see if I can get it done in a couple of weeks. The PCV valve I got off amazon, probably not the best place to source quality parts but we'll see how it works out

My high flow BMS OCC captures nothing, it's got oil residue on the inside but nothing accumulating. Running it for the last few years which is odd compared to others who have to empty it every 6 months...

You can try adding steel wool, the heavier gauge stuff, to add more surface area to catch more. Been done on other platforms. The more surface area catches more and then it drains down to the bottom. Just don't get the thin stuff.

So did all of you guys replace your valve covers with another OEM or did anyone some of you upgrade? Mine is currently cracked and I’ve already got the coils out (the easy part) waiting on new ones but I obviously need to replace the VC. Some of those aluminum aftermarket ones look very nice but I obviously they don’t have the PCV system built in. Not sure what to do because I don’t want another cracked cover.

They OEM ones last a fairly long time from my experience.

If you go with an aluminum one you need to make your PVC external. So a low side can and high side can would be ideal as well as block off the ports in your head while you are in there.

It's going to cost a good deal more for the aluminum and both high and low side kits than just a stock OEM VC.

Sure, there are advantages to externalizing the PCV system, but do you want to spend a grand on this or $300 bucks? Want to empty your catch cans every oil change?

I would go with the m18 VC, have them shave off the logo, powdercoated black, and then get the RB low side full kit with mishimoto catch can and the BMS high side kit. Don't forget you want a vac source under load and not.

Lol yeah nobody seems to like the m18 logo. Thanks for the reply. I’ve been researching this for the past 12 hours or so trying to figure out the best route. Nobody enjoys changing valve covers and I hate to do it more than once but the cost difference is SUNY. IMaybe I will go with the stock replacement. Are the generic brands any good? I see ECS has several choices besides the OEM one. Also I wonder if there’s a way to reinforce the OEM VC.
I’ve hard this car a little over a month so I’m pretty sure this problem was already in existence. It’s got 59k miles and it’s a 2010. Coincidentally I received an email from the bmw dealer where I got my oil changed 3 weeks ago if I wanted get an extended warranty lol. Hmm 🤔

Are there any good aftermarket plastic valve covers that are as good than the OEM valve cover for less money, or are you better off just spending the money and getting a new OEM valve cover?

I need to change my VCG.....and I wasn't' going to replace the actual valve cover, until I saw this. I'm assuming there is no good way to clean the PCV ports out in the valve cover....so replacing the whole thing is the only way to make sure everything is working right....right?

Correct, there is no 'good' way to clean it and it could crack anyways because of the age later.

I have only installed OEM VCs on n54s, no idea the quality of the aftermarket ones. If your stock one lasted say 150k and you assume the aftermarket will last half the age 75k miles. Are you going to own the car in 75k? Not saying this is the right math but a new OEM from FCP is $400.

People have talked about upgrading the OEM by reinforcing the area where they usually crack. I don't think this is worth it personally.

I Have a smoking exhaust, think my VC is clogged but I have OCC on the low side and ports in the head plugged a year ago when I replaced VCG only. Can clogged ports in the VC still cause smoking issues if my head ports are plugged or is something else causing the smoke? Had my turbo’s tested already, shop says they’re fine not leaking any oil.

Could a clogged pcv port(s) in the valve cover cause intermittent smoke out of the exhaust? Once every week or two I will randomly get some smoke/oil smell out of the exhaust while idling in traffic...I'm wondering if it could be a VC issue. I don't think it's turbo seals or it would be doing it constantly....

I am currently having a URO valve cover installed today. Got it off ebay from a seller who is offering 2 years warranty and I got it for $400 Canadian. Also having the RB PCV installed, will report back how it goes.

Well it’s not the ports in the valve cover, although yes if they clog then pcv won’t work causing high crankcase pressure with possibly turbo seals leaking. I’ve removed the vc and all looks clean, 200.000km still factory vc. Guess good oil and regular maintenance helps.

Just an update I've had this URO valve cover for close to 4 months with no issues if anyone is ever considering a non-OEM replacement.
