does anyone have grease at the lower steering joint / rack

Noticed this grime. I also see something similar on used racks for sale online. Checked my PS fluid level, and if you want to say 1 is low, 2 is mid, 3 is full, it was at 2.5. Any ideas? I doesn't look like the rack is serviceable, or is it (given knock offs are $300--but our steering is legendary )

edit I did some searching and someone said it's a 12 hour job to replace the rack. I almost fell out of my seat doing the math in my head. then another person said no, it's 2.5 hrs and it almost takes as long to do the alignment.

Yeah, I do as well. Not something I'm concerned about. The joints are greased, and I'm sure just some has leaked out over time from water, debris, etc.

Gotcha, I saw someone doing his X5 online (due to a clunk) and his seemed awfully dirty as well, and as mentioned, the used racks seem to be similar. Maybe it's a BMW thing where nobody would notice unless looking there...the only indicator would seem to be power steering fluid level being low, but half a tick in a couple of years doesn't seem like a lot...

Reviving an old thread. I've actually had this problem and an Indy shop just knocked some debris off and greased up the joint and it was good as new. I'm sure older e92s such as mine, 7 yrs, are experiencing similar issues.

FYI, I just jacked it up and blasted it with some lube and cleaner on the driver side.

What are the symptoms of this issue and what lube did you use?
