Adaptive Headlight. To buy or not to buy, to fix or not to fix
I've had many BMW's. I always felt like my car was the only car imported from the UK and took part that were different from all the other BMW's.
Well, here it is again. The driver side headlight in my 2006 E90 is all rusted inside, components short circuited (I lost the trim cover in the wheelwell and all the water has been splashing inside the headlight. Like with other BMW's I have owned I cannot find an adaptive headlight the is a match. So what are the options: 1- Go to the dealer and hand over the $1400 for a new headlight... yikes?? 2- buy two after market headlights and do away with the adjustable headlight feature (I just need a low beam and a high beam, right)? what other complications can I expect? Coding? not working? not as cool? 3- many people selling cracked broken headlights "for parts". Is it possible to rebuild the headlight from parts from other headlights? I need the driver's side, Can I rebuild mine from a passenger side? I think from my headlight the housing is good, the ballast is good. The motors inside are rusted and the SRM does not look good. 4 what other options are there? Thank you for your opinion/thoughts/insults/whatever... |

you can rebuild headlight if buy same side and same type of the car (LHD or RHD) but you have to replace SMC module because it is located at the bottom of the headlight and all water flows to it

Thank you for the reply.
Can I use the SRM that is with the headlight that I buy for parts? My headlight is not cracked or broken but the motors inside are clearly rusted the SRM is bubbled up, I would think it,s not good any more. There is a headlight at my local wrecking yard that seems to have good clean parts inside and the SRM looks clean not rusted, but is cracked and all the tabs are broken. There is another headlight for less money but is the opposite side from what I need. Thank you |

you can swap to halogens and get rid of the adaptive headlights.
you will need to recode some things so you don't get errors about it. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=773380 |

I've found new adaptive headlight assemblies for the e90 lci for around $650. I had to replace a headlight when I got into a fender bender a while back, and I found that hella makes one. I purchased that and it's been working perfectly over the last two years. Also, I've noticed that the outer halo ring on the hella unit seems to light up better than the oem unit. I know age has part to do with that, and you can tell the oem headlight is slightly more yellow than the new one, but I can't recall ever seeing the oem light that bright on the outer ring with led angel eye bulbs.
