If it's cranking but not starting check your battery or fuel pump. I had problem starting this past sat on my car. The car would crank but wont start even if I tried to jump it. So from this I didn't think it was starter or battery. Tow to bmw today they told me fuel pump is bad.

From a visual standpoint check Essentric Shaft Sensor next. Check for oil inside the connector. Iff u find oil, you wil need to replace it and kind a big job since you will have to remove valve cover gasket. Keep us posted.

In the beginning the battery was dead, as you had to jump it. So, I'd still start there and get that checked out to see if it's bad or not. If it's good, then move on to the PD Box, IBS sensor, starter, injectors, fuel pump, etc. :-)

yes it was one of the ccid#. you can hear it, its pretty loud in the back seat. but maybe its shot too? i have a question? when an airbag blows and the red terminal BST cable blows out, will the car crank when you press the start button, or will it do nothing?

my airbag blew and detached the red BST cable by the battery, but i put it all back together, and I'm pretty sure its good now.

Your airbag blew? Presumably you hit something? You didn't include any of this information.

I believe there is an inertia switch which shuts down the fuel pump in the event of an accident. Someone may know more about this...

You really should just bring this car to a shop, it sounds like you've got a lot of issues going on.

Agreed that it's probably time for a shop. Did the airbag blow immediately before the car stopped starting properly? We know the starter and battery are good, so fuel delivery sounds like the next area to look into.

yes the airbag blew because i hit something, sorry guys… i shoulda said that earlier. im gonna take a stab at it, i work on cars but this is my first bmw! inertia switch? never heard of it. but after factoring out most things, i am believing that the fuel pump is the culprit

No, you are not required to repair or replace it, however, if you don't you could run into the same problem. Basically, what was happening in my car was that the battery cable was just sitting on the positive terminal but couldn't be tightened down on the terminal. If I hit a really good bump, the cable would pop up off the terminal. I had weird, intermittent power surges when driving at highway speeds and hit a good bump. I realized that there were a couple different compartments on the top of the battery and they ALL need to be tight and working. If you look at the schematic that xxxjecxxx posted, the part on top just needs to be unclipped at the front and back of the battery to try to lift off the terminal. Please follow safety precautions when working around electricity.

I guess the question is, how handy are you? Are you able to do this work or are you comfortable working on the car yourself?
