Oil filter cap o-ring leaking
Hey guys,
I searched hi and lo but no hard answer about this. I'm talking about the big O-ring seal that goes inside the oil filter "cap"... not the oil filter housing gasket. I've done that already, thanks. I noticed mist of motor oil "spray" out to the surrounding areas...upper coolant hose, alternator bracket, and IMPORTANTLY the alternator itself. This must be from under high boost and air pressure build up from crank case, I guess. Not that stock boost is any cleaner. I see moderate amount of oily gunk built up on the face of the alternator. If good amount of oily vapor does get sucked into the alternator, it'll kill the alternator! And probably happen in the middle of freeway or in some unfortunate situations...knock on wood. I noticed that as it gets older, the more of this crap spitting out, because of, I guess, weaker and thinner O-ring it becomes. Definitely more noticeable on tuned cars. For now, I take off the air inlet off to get access of alternator face and wipe down with carb cleaner. As of right now, if someone carry Viton seal it'd be best bet. Do we need to carry more of this O-rings and change it in between oil changes? It seems common on all BMWs. Sucks |

I saw a leak from the oil filter cap....once.
Not sure if this is related.....but My issue turned out to be that the oil filter cap was not seated all the way to the base of the cap touching the filter housing. Also, note that the big o-ring is not supposed to be all the way to the base of the cap. DN |

I would've taken picture but I wiped it down already.
It looks though as if I need to clean the alternator face, I'd have to drain coolant, take the top water hose off, and the air inlet to the turbo to gain access....or take some small wire brush and carb cleaner and hope for the best. |

One thing to note is that the O-ring seal is so thin that when I take the cap off and put it back on, it's like almost no resistance. Very different from a brand new filter/seal going in. Also I don't see that the seal is at the base of the cap either. |
