I'm actually on the lookout for a cpo 335i or 335xi to replace my current 2006 e90 325i.
Should I even bother looking for a 2009-2011 n54 sedan or should I wait a little while and then get the f30 instead?

Seems there's so much / potential problems with the n54.

I dunno - I say if you get a CPO one with warranty, go for it. Any "problems" would be handled by the warranty, and it's an *awesome* engine - I find it to be better than the N55, for tuning/mods, anyway. I wouldn't buy an out-of-warranty one, but would if it were. Just don't forget that N54 ended what, in the first part of 2010?

I guess you had dealt with some problems. CPO is only good for another 2-3years max from the time you take possession on the car.
I know it has a great engine but might come with headaches. Probably the same reason you got rid of it.

I'll see what I find but they are all ranging in the 30k price range and with taxes... close to 36k.

Unless I find one with decent low mileage under 30k then I'll consider it.
Preferably with sport package, manual.

Oh I had tons of problems with mine That said I regret not a second of having owned it. But yeah - if only 2-3 years left, then it's not enough time to enjoy it (I'd hesitate keeping it past warranty unless it's completely not modded and never has been).

Lies. The BMW 003 was the true king.

Here is my point of view and it's not because I still own a 335. The N54 engine is bulletproof compared to many other engines and by engine I exclude what I define as auxiliary components like turbos, wastegates etc. So to me engine are the internals, cylinders, valves, heads etc only. Weaknesses on the turbos, wastegates are really easy to fix. If that car was 400 lbs lighter, I'd keep it!

I dunno, "weakness on the turbo" is what, a $6K job? I'm a bit hesitant to call that "easy to fix"

As for the weight... easy! Delete rear seat, swap hood/trunk for CF, remove soundproofing (there's prob 100 lbs just of that) (but keep the interior, don't need to go all out), and strip and weld the rear doors. there's your 400 lbs.

Why is that? A little underpowered, no?

The N54 was a good first foray into the turbo realm. A few glitches here and there, so besides the wastegate, HPFP, and injectors issues, the 335 rocks.

It is not always about power. The S14 was truly special when it came to life at higher revs and with the sweet E30 chassis that combo defines the roots of the M brand. Driven around town the S14 was a regular (if you want to call it regular) 4-banger however in the open road or track it was great!

Damn, I should have bought that mint E30 M3 last year...

There have been so many great BMW engines that we can discuss this forever. Your, and Tony's, inline 6 is also a fantastic engine especially that raspy metallic sound.

To Ken, did you consider a 135i and stripping the car for track purpose? It is a nice chassis, compact with a powerful engine. I find the 1 Series Coupe to be a modern day E30 but with many more modern day amenities.

I could have been worse yet. It could have transformed into a toaster or cuisinart mixer. That would have been a bitch to step into ... and fire her up ...

I used to get limp mode/misfires everytime I full throttled it last summer. Car was shaking and sounded like an sti with exhaust. Changed coils and plugs and still got it. So instead of doing carbon cleaning or changing injectors I did the seafoam treatment. Sucked 3/4 of it thru the engine bay. And 1/4 of it in gas tank. The limp mode/misfires disappeared immediately. I did nothing else to the car. Coincidence?

But I will still do a proper intake valve cleaning in the future.

How long after you put in the Seafoam did your car smoke?

I will keep researching.

N54s are bullet proof compared to the Cayman's boxers and the LS7. But that weight.........

dont get discouraged ken.... many engines have issues when pushed to the limit on the race track... even race cars with custom made engines have to be rebuilt a couple of times a season.

the only way is to find an engine that has problems which cost the least amount of cash to fix. then again you might have to deal with other issues even if you find a car with no engine issues... think bout subframe failures, brake system weakness, suspension links failing, weak differentials, etc.

this is what i am not clear about... how do you suck the fluid through the engine bay? you just pour it into the air intake !?
