Cracked turbo manifold after downpipe install

Hi! A shop installed downpipes on my 335i and I have a lot of issues since. Wg rattle has increased, it's vibrating in idle and there is exhaust smell when AC is on especially on idle. Took it to a more reputable BMW shop and they found a crack in one of the turbos manifold, probably explaining the exhaust smell. Have anyone else experienced cracked manifold after installing dp's? My turbos have done over 200'000 km so I guess new turbos is the only way to go or could they be fixed?

This is the first time I'm hearing about the stock manifold cracking, but it might be a good time to get a single turbo kit....

I've never heard of the turbofolds cracking, wastegate rattle is amplified after installing catless dps, experienced it myself as well. It would be much more worth it if you're paying someone to do the work to just buy new turbos. Whether you go with OEM turbos, upgraded, or even a single that's completely up to you. I wouldn't waste any money on trying to repair the turbo(s) especially with 200000kms on them. My suggestion would be to get yourself a brand new set or a single.

Man, these engines have 99 problems, but I didn't think a cracked turbo manifold was one of them. I wonder if it cracked due to the downpipes being improperly clocked and therefore overstressing the manifold. I'll echo what has already been said to take this opportunity to replace (read: UPGRADE) those turbos. Are you tuned?

Yes thats what I'm thinking, the install is probably the more expensive thing than the turbos so its probably more vice to just replace them. Refurbished and fixed turbos are like €500 or I could get new Viv 17T or 19T for like €900. Do i have to do any more upgrades if I'm buying 17T/19T if I'm ok with around 500 hp? I already have FBO and I dont want to spend a ton of money.

I'm running eBay 16T's and they've been great so far, but it's only been 1k miles. If you're looking for 500whp with new turbos, you'll need to upgrade your LPFP and maybe move to a 3.5 BAR TMAP, but that should be it.

I was thinking 500 bhp so around 425 whp, maybe more in the future if I feel the need of it.

You're probably better off getting the RB OEM billets. It supports your power level goals with billet wastegates so they never rattle and I think its much better than getting some random eBay replacement turbos.

Would buying used oem turbos in decent condition and wastegate repair kit be a good option? It would only cost like €250 in total

Most would go against that, I did it however with my old car $250 from my local scrap yard off a 100,000 km N54 with a 90 day warranty. Put 7,000km on them and sold the car never had any issues. I think it really depends on how long you plan to keep the car. IMO since your paying a shop to do the labour I'd go with new and be done with it.
