Do they put on the clicks to test the car/engine??
I'm pretty sure that, well at least in US, for cars like BMW the salesmen will ALWAYS go on the test drive with you unless you bought several cars from him already, so that eliminates the possibility of a test driver going nuts on your potential ride. But I've heard of horror stories about how the kids who park cars in the dealership took brand mew M3s on joy-rides.

Bought mine off the lot and didn't notice until I went to close the deal that it had 106 miles on it. Must have used it for some test drives.

Here's something interesting, my mate at work is buying a Golf GTI and has been doing the Golf forums like this one. On one of these forums he found that the Golf can have its odometer reset up to 2 times if it hasn't gone past 100km!!!!!! He has the procedure for it and is going to try it out. This sounds odd to me, and I hope that the e90 does not have this feature! (I am sure it wouldn't because it sounds dodgy to me, and BMW isn't like that)

On the E36 you could dissconect the speedo

On the E90 the milage is stored in multiple locations, so even if you get a new Instrument cluster it will update itself with the cars proper milage

That's good to know. Surprisingly this VW thing is a "feature" - for who though, the dealers???

Probably so dealers can take the cars for test drives and not worry a customer will say he doesnt want it because its got 80Km on it

To me its like fraud

Exactly how I see it 'Fleet. I think it is a disgrace that the manufacturer would put such a feature in obviously for this very purpose.

There certainly is some distance taking the car from the factory to a shipping truck, then from a truck to a ship, then the ship to VPC and onto a truck. I wouldn't be surprised if this took a couple of miles. I also thought that BMW ran the car at least on a test fixture for a couple of simulated miles for testing before putting the BMW logo on it. It shows this in a video here for the new BMW factory.

Mine had 80km on it.

It seems that it's common practice here to take new cars out for test drives. The Audi, Saab and BMW cars that I test drove were all going to be sold as new. I hammered all three of them as one would on a test drive and had no complaints from any of the sales people.

I thought it seemed a bit unethical, and an obvious way for the dealer to save on having to discount cars used as demos.

I'd be interested to hear from some other Montreal members on this...
