Had a change of heart, ordered oem vacuum engine mounts. I figured if I'm going to post on here hoping to get feedback I should probably listen to the responses. Thank you guys for your input!

It's been my intention since purchase to keep this car looking absolutely stock, always had a soft spot for sleepers, but I finally caved and ordered wheel spacers. I don't mind the mundane look of the 195 wheels but never have liked the fender gap. I ordered three pairs, 12, 15 and 18mm. I read elsewhere that the 12/15mm combo is just right for the 195 wheels but I wanted to try 15/18mm to see if it works out.

What wheels do you have RL18? 195's as well? UPS delivered the 15mm and 18mm and I got them installed today but had to wrap up and get my girls from daycare so didn't get a chance to check clearance with travel. It looks like the 18s are going to rub or be cunt hair close, the 15mm set looks good up front but my bumper cover is off right now. Still waiting on USPS for my 12mm set...

Haha yeah, I'm pretty sure the 18s are going to rub but I'm almost due for a set of rear tires so I'm going to offer up a pair of sacrifices to the stance gods and give them a chance on the road. The Michelin PS4s made a huge improvement in handling over the runflats but man do they wear quick!
I really like the sound of your setup. I always loved the dual spoke rim styles and I bet the car looks mean drooped over them on those b14s! |

It was an expensive upgrade but well worth the handling you get from it. But here's a visual...

You need shadowline trim RL......Overall ET 40 ( 18x9.5 et40 )in the rear is perfect...i have 275/35/18 in the rear no rubbing, pretty sure i could go wider if i wanted.

RL, your car looks sweet! I wanted black bad (REALLY BAD) when I was shopping for mine. Everything I found was high mileage or had a light interior (I'm a dirty guy, would've ruined it). I finally settled for silver, my least my favorite color, because it was SO pristine and was factory equipped just as I wanted. The silver has finally grown on me, it reminds me of an old mans base model car and I like to imagine myself as a prematurely old grumpy guy.
Did your car come equipped with standard or sport suspension? It might be the camera angle but it doesn't look like it sits much lower than mine does. |

My car had the sport suspension. I had a shock blown on the passenger front and just decided to replace it all rather then mess around with another shock going out, etc. I could actually go lower like a couple inches but due to my wheel spacing I was limited, so it's pretty high up currently. I'm plenty happy with it though I couldn't imagine being lower... Lots of cringing going over some things lol, I'm glad it hibernates in the winter anyways

That's awesome, I shopped for a year as well, you're a lucky man! I've been on the fence about the X5d for my wife, she drives a 2018 4runner, it's slow and gets horrible fuel economy but still manages to be very enjoyable. Temptingly, toyota keeps offering to buy it back with increasingly better offers but it's SO nice to have a vehicle I never have to work on!
I think your ride height is perfect, I can't imagine going any lower without daily clearance issues. I grit my teeth over every speed bump on my oem sport setup. What mileage were you at when your strut let go? Was it caused by normal wear or an incident? |

I'm not really sure! I didn't really notice it till around 120k (bought at 89k) I just saw that the turbos had grease all over them and the passenger side wheel well and all the suspension parts were cover in grease and just thought what the heck, perfect excuse to buy coilovers, cause if I replace one shock I'm sure the other side will go, then the rear. Plus I already had the m3 suspension installed so I knew it would complement that perfectly

Got all my parts delivered, engine came Monday. I messaged the seller pre-purchase about turbos being included, they confirmed yes and I bought it. Engine came with no turbos and seller wouldn't respond. Filed a dispute and got my turbos delivered today. Engine is a little greasy but no corrosion anywhere and is cleaning up very nicely. It had egr intact and no visible mods cbu is not bad at all. Looks like it was well maintained and cared for so I'm pretty stoked as things stand presently
Edit: My engine is out and I have 16' of worktop covered in parts and fastener bins as well as a large stucco tub FULL of coolant hardpipes and hoses. Wasn't difficult to pull once all the rigging was out of the way and the trans was lowered for bellhousing clearance. Last edited by UnnecessarilyComplex; 12-10-2020 at 02:51 PM.. |

I've been trying to post photos as I go but every time I try I get a message error saying the page can't handle the request. I'll try downsizing the files and give it another go.

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not. The thread is now loading strangely after loading those pics, the text portion is shrunk down to the left and the images are blown up to the point that I have to scroll left/right to see the whole picture. Anyways, there's a couple pictures to get started, let me know if there's anything in particular you guys want me to post pics of.

How hard did you find it to disconnect the engine and trans? When I swapped mine out, I removed the engine with the trans from the car and then separated both. I know the bell housing bolts are doable, but I cant imagine the rest was as easy while in the car. |

Thanks for the tip on resizing the photos, I'll give that a shot next time.
As for divorcing the trans, it was very easy. I first thought I would have to pull the TC bolts from the starter location but while I was under the car I noticed the handy little window bmw placed in the passenger side bellhousing cover. I first pulled the TC bolts, lifted the engine/trans with hoist and removed engine mount brackets and the trans support bracket. I lowered everything and let the trans pan rest on blocks. After that I pulled the bellhousing and its cover bolts, the trans split from the engine as soon as I started lifting with no fuss at all. Bolt access was fine everywhere especially after removing the engine mount and trans support brackets so that the engine could be pushed side to side. I left the steering and a/c pumps in the body and didn't have to disconnect any of the plumbing for them, the engine cleared those easily. They're cute little tiny things once you get them stripped down and out! |

If anybody else is looking for a replacement or spare engine a super clean, fully dressed engine with 43k mi just popped up on ebay for $4,500. Sure wish it would have been available when I was shopping for one!
