Doubt you'll pass smog without cats. California is one, if not the strictest states about emissions laws. If you plan on doing this, I hope you know "someone" that can pass you.

Since the N54 stock exhaust has cats, the OP's question is will dpfix + catless downpipes pass smog? "You can pass "with illegal help" *giggles* is not the answer he's looking for. BMW drivers...

You are correct. California no longer requires a sniffer test anymore. Law passed on January 1, 2013.
http://www.smogtips.com/new-smog-law-AB-2289.cfm It can cost anywhere from $200-$500 to "pass" nowadays. HiYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA |

I know people are running castles, so they are either going to swap to stock downpipes, use a dp fix, or find someone that could help. But, even if you find someone, I know that the smog testers can get in trouble for doing so. I also want to know what single turbo people are going to do... |

In CA they changed the law to allow obd testing only, but smog shops are pushing back because they use the sniffer test to milk money from there customers it's even stated in the description of the new law about them doing this. There are some shops that have adapted the new way, just call around because it not only helps with smog, but its also cheaper so you have a right to ask if they do it or not since its cheaper at those locations. The main part of the law. "Although OBD II systems have steadily improved over the years, concerns still remain with faulty OBD systems in late 1990's and early 2000 vehicles passing the OBD II portion of the test but still failing the tailpipe emissions test. Furthermore, oxides of nitrogen, or NOx is a key contributor to air pollution and is currently measured through the tailpipe emissions test. ASCCA recommends that OBD II-only testing be performed on 2000 model year and newer vehicles." This bill follows that recommendation and provides BAR the authority to employ the OBD II-only testing option on model year 2000 and newer vehicles." The scam from smog stations "The shift of vehicles away from tailpipe testing requirements will erode the ability of existing businesses to generate future income on their investments; and could also deteriorate our state's air quality. " All from, http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/09-10/..._sen_comm.html

They only thing they "should" or must do now is a OBDII readiness test. If your car has not been through a complete cycle since an ECU reset, they can do a sniff test. If they plug in and all sensors are okay and it passes readiness, they should issue the certificate.
Cars less than 5 years old don't need a test unless the ownership has changed. |

He can pass with an e85 mix if his cats are still doing well. All he needs is the downpipe fix for the obd 2 test. The e85 will reduce c02's to an acceptable level that the other 2 cats can handle. I'm guessing e50 is the sweet spot, but do a smog test with e30/e40 first and see what happens. If you barley fail, just add more e85 till you pass. The tune needs its fuel scaler adjusted, but thats about it.

Well I failed my test. Not too surprised but my numbers were way off for one portion of the test. For reference I have catless downpipes but secondaries still in. I was also running 25% e85 just to see if it helped. Honestly don't think I can pass a sniff test even with 50% e85.... has anyone actually done this with similar setup?
If only I could find an obd test-only shop. (I have dpfix) If anyone has suggestions, please let me know. |

You need to drive it for 30 mins, then if you have to wait in line, you leave the car on. I can't see you failing even with 91 octane. I passed in a 600hp mustang fully built with cams, ported heads, stroked pistons and a Bassani x pipe. I passed with only 2 high flow cats. These cats had maybe 1000 miles on them which is the only reason i tried it. I barely passed with a 48 out of 51 or something like that. I made sure to drive 30mins before, and left it idling. The smog shop guy said, "your leaving your car on?" I said, "yes". He then said, "Oh you know your stuff, I always tell people to let it idle but they prefer not to." With e30 and the rear stock 2 cats i just cant see you failing. Post up your smog paper. I'm curious whats the issue. Did you drive the car for at least 30mins to get those cats hot? Did you turn your car off when waiting longer? If it was only 2-4mins it wouldnt be much of a heat loss but anything longer than 10 could be alot depending on the outside temperatures.

I did drive the car at roughly 30 minutes before testing. No highway driving, but the car was nice and warmed up.
Here are my numbers that failed me: 15mph 52 (max allowed) 4 (ave) 159 (Measured) 25mph 36 (max allowed) 4 (ave) 88 (Measured) As you can see in both the tests I'm more than double the maximum. I would say that the car sat turned off maybe 5 minutes before the test. I mean... I could try it again with more e85 and leaving it idling.... you think it's worth it? Right now I'm considering getting my stock DPs put back in... |
