Sorry I just don't see the point. You're spending more money, more work, just to use an oil that may or may not meet the needs of your engine. The bmw recommended schedule will not damage your car when using the approved oil. Virtually all of the high mileage bmws on this forum got there using the bmw schedule and nothing more; they aren't full of sludge either. If you aren't comfortable change it every 10k miles instead of the every 15-20k. You'll still be spending less money, produce less waste oil, and you know it meets the requirements of the car. Do what you want and glad it's working for you, but you're going explicitly against bmws recommendations when there is zero evidence of problems with it.

Mobil 1 0w40 or BMW branded 5w30 - whichever is cheaper.

i had an indy do my oil, he told me m1 5-30 was compatible. I discovered later that it is not.
after two oil changes of this, my car began to whistle, jammed vanos sensors, logging fault codes.
i can't say non LL01 is the culprit, but now I do my own oil changes with LL01 (also tested and cleaned vanos solenoids) and have had 0 problems since.
Why take chances? m1 0-40 is LL01 and you can buy it at Walmart for cheap.

+1 many n54 people on here use m1 0w40. Don't use any other Mobil product on an n54. I just switched to Motul 5w40 which many also use. German Castrol is popular too. This probobly isn't as important for the non-n54 crowd thought. N54s run at 240+ degrees and benefit from better oil.

Personally I use the bmw brand oil, but any of the ll01 rated oils should be fine. Mobile 1 0w-40 being one of them and it's no more expensive than their 5w-30.

I buy Mobil 1 0w40 from Walmart (which is $24) for 5 qt. It is BMW LL-01 and been using it for 3 oil changes now and no problems whatsoever. Saves me a ton of money and before then, I had been using BMW 5w30.

Just make sure you get Walmart's Mobil 1 0w40 european formula. You will be fine.
