I think Direct Line allow up to 20% increase. After that you might be looking at a specialist insurer like Adrian Flux.

It is easy for an insuer to tell the car is mapped, it is almost impossible to tell what percentage the gain is.

Yes good question re: warranty probs - i was worried about BMW insurance (my insurer) as I'm sure they might mention to BMW that I have a remap/power booster thingy thus voiding warranty! To be fair though BMW insurance is underwritten by another company.

Anyhow I called them to ask for a quote for an SSTT (which I have just bought of steve here via ebay) and they stated 54 quid, or 70 pounds to keep the excess down £150. The mod is under chipping and they wanted to know the BHP gain, which is less than 10%

Cheers!

How much did you tell them it was remapped by??

286bhp standard, now 310bhp or there abouts, so a 10% gain at most!

hmm you've got my thinking now, oh dear not sure what the gains are on the SSTT.

Ok standard BHP is 306, up to 40 BHP gains, so that is exactly 10%??? (I did maths A level BTW so I maybe wrong! ) or is it 13.07 % - help!!!

PS think my excess was 350 going up to 500 with SSTT, but I can pay 70 to keep at 350 (as opposed to 55)

I paid an extra £75.00, which seemed reasonable.

I did stress that the MPG enhancement was more of a benefit than the power increase though, the power spike is just a consequence after all.

Dazza, there is no link between BMW insurance and BMW UK as far as I am aware, so I would doubt that any info would be passed across.

acutally it must be 13% unfortunately this takes the premium into another bracket - 11-19% so its £105. Will pay the prenium when I get the SSTT

Temptation is starting to take hold.....

remap,insurance company reaction

Of those of you that have had a remap, what was the reaction from the insurance company,I know all of you will have told them, how much extra did they want?
I am not sure i want to go with a remap but knowing what to expect re insurance would help me to make up my mind [E92 320D]
thanks, Bob

For a power increase modification (remap or otherwise) between 11% and 20% I'm charged an extra (roughly) £50 or about 10% for a year by Direct Line on an E91 320d 163bhp (now about 195bhp according to retailer claims).

Liverpool Victoria support most mods and are well priced at the moment.

You can set it all up on line so no need to even pick the phone up to them !

Reckon on about + £100 for your re-map.

well technicly the first responce was ... '' whats that ''

then after a few acurate but 'choice words' to describe the modification they told me it would be an extra £100 , not bad for the extra performance i think !

They only really knew about "chipping" when I called up, but what they really want to know is that it's a modification for a performance gain in the range 11% to 20% in my case, I think 10% or less means no extra charge and presumably a higher premium still for a 21%+ power gain.

Charges seem quite varied, I was only thinking of a couple of years time when i downsize to perhaps a 118d m sport getting nearer to retirement [old git]
my insurance now is only about £320 so i wouldn't want to pay as much extra as Carlos!
The 118d is in the low road tax bracket and a lot cheaper than the 120,got to think of all the costs involved, perhaps a remap up to the 120 power?
thanks for all the replies, i did try a search but couldn't find anything

This isn't meant to suggest anything but honesty (as best policy in these cases), but how can an insurance company tell you've had a remap and how unlucky would you have to be for them to check and find out???

Wheel and cosmetic mods are obvious, but you'd have to be very unlucky to get sussed on a flash...especially if dealers can't really detect them...

(BTW... I've not had anything done...)

Should the line be 'I have modified my engine management to give better fuel economy. A by product of the economy gains is up to 10% more power'

Can't penalise you for 'driving more carefully' and wanting more mpg??!!
