Carly 0047B2 motor oil, oil viscosity critical

Still trying to fix an ongoing DPF regen problem after replacing the EGR stat and eventually unblocking it with the DPF cleaner/clearing codes method. The soot mass started to build up again since my last post on the matter, so I replaced the main thermostat this weekend and also cleaned the MAF sensor whilst I was at it.

As I'm trying to regen and running Carly, a new code has popped up namely:

0047B2 motor oil, oil viscosity critical

I can't seem to find much information on it on the internet but I would find it unusual as I change the oil when it tells me (the indie does it and has done for past ten years) and I still have until next year before the next oil change, having only had it done last year...so I'm not convinced that the oil's gone bad. I also drive very conservatively i.e. I don't thrash it at all.

I'm wondering if anyone knows exactly what it means and could I have upset something e.g. a sensor when I did the main thermostat change? I wonder if that error is now stopping any regens...

Thanks

Dan

Strange, I googled the code as well and there is nothing on Google. Maybe try taking the car to your indi and getting the code scanned on a BMW scanner, see if Carley pulled the wrong code??

The code could well be stopping the car from doi g the regen.

Yes, might do that a bit later down the line. Carly does pull some codes that don't belong on my car like it always logs a code about the non-existent sunroof not working!

Do you definitely have the correct car selected in the app? I had issues with my Carley until I realised I still had my mates car selected!

Carly is a bit average. You would be better using ISTA or INPA to read the codes.

Only ever had the one car on there but will double-check tomorrow!

Interestingly I found a Czech BMW forum where a member had the same code under same circumstances (changing stats, problems with DPF). I joined the forum and posted on the thread to see if they had solved the problem as it had not had an answer from 2018. I have just had a reply from another member saying the following (translated):

Quote:
The oil can be diluted with fuel during frequent regeneration of the particulate filter, test the oil on paper with a napkin, you can find the rest on Google. This is the so-called drip oil test. Alternatively, aspirate, if the oil is OK, about half a liter so that it is between the lines. If it is diluted with fuel, the oil will definitely change, losing viscosity. I guess your oil is getting a little bigger. If extreme, you may have a cracked or leaky piston.
Having googled DPF regen it would seem that fuel used for the regen is fed back into the oil with an unsuccessful regen...I did not know that. Being that I've had a fair share of those over the past couple of months I would hazard a guess and say it isn't a fault with a sensor but an actual fact. However, I was hoping the CBS would catch up but it still says next year for an oil change...guess I'll have to bring that forward!

Just change the oil, you don't have to wait for the service indicator. I change mine at least every 8 to10k or once a year if I haven't reached 10k. Doing way less milage now I work from home 3 days a week.

Yes I will and I'll probably do it myself this time to save money, I'm feeling a bit peeved that it's 9 months premature/cost of living/mumble mumble grumble....

I'm a little bit concerned that the same thing will happen if I don't sort the regen problem out, as I thought I'd fixed it last time, so I'll get this problem again. Bit of a catch 22 if that particular oil viscosity error is stopping the regen though and I won't find out until I've changed the oil, lol.

Well that didn't work...

I replaced the oil and filter this weekend, cleared the codes, reset the service indicator for the oil, car regens ok and of the two scans I've done it still comes up with the oil viscosity error which is clearly wrong....not sure what else to try now. At least the presence of that code is not stopping a regen!

Quick update on this. After a few journeys and error cleardowns in Carly the oil viscosity error has now disappeared which is good news!

Pleased for you but not surprised. The oil sensor takes a while to recalibrate.
