One more Head Unit Thread - With Specific Application Questions
I recently picked-up a mint 2013 335IS E93 with 5,000 miles. Love everything about the car but want to update the radio for a more modern experience. After countless hours researching my options, I think I know what I want and need, but seeking advice from those in the know or those who have tackled this project.
My car has Logic 7 Premium stereo without iDrive, see pic of center stack here; I’ve settled on the Eonon 7” HU as I want the most factory looking option as possible. I’m willing to give up the latest 9” version to retain the OEM look. I also added the optical fiber decoder box and CarPlay dongle. Here’s a picture of my shopping cart; Lastly, I’ll add some sort of truck handle camera similar to the one below; That set-up, I believe, will accomplish what I’m after. So here are my questions for the experts; 1 - Am I on the right track? 2 - Will I get the SOS warning in the dash? 3 - Will I get any other malfunctions? 4 - Will I retain all OEM functions in steering wheel, etc? 5 - What happens to the Park Assist button at the bottom of my current stack? I think the new set-up uses the entire space? 6 - I’m assuming sound quality will be at least as good as OEM? 7 - Anything else I’m missing? Thanks in advance for all your help. |

That's the unit I have and I like it.
2 - Will I get the SOS warning in the dash? Yes. Either live with it or code it out. 3 - Will I get any other malfunctions? No. 4 - Will I retain all OEM functions in steering wheel, etc? Yes -- although for some odd reason, I can answer my phone from the steering wheel -- but not hang up. 5 - What happens to the Park Assist button at the bottom of my current stack? I think the new set-up uses the entire space? You'll lose this functionality unless you move it to the ashtray. I lost my 'downhill assist' button. 6 - I’m assuming sound quality will be at least as good as OEM? My sound quality is fine. I'd say volume is not quite as loud as OEM. 7 - Anything else I’m missing? I'd wait on the Apple dongle. Once you have Android running -- will you really want to use CarPlay? I like running Google Maps 'native'. Music streams from the phone as expected. In any case adding the dongle later is trivial. |

I’ll have SOS with the fiber optic adapter? What do you mean by coding it out? |

you have to remove two software lines from the Kombi (instrument panel )
to turn off the SOS monitor and unplug the TCU , Mulf 2 Hi that covers that function. This is accomplished using NCS expert from standard tools. these two lines TCM_ALIVE_MONITOR -> nicht_activ TCM_ID_MONITOR -> nicht_activ must have nicht added. You need for your new head unit to support PDC check with the manufacturer of the head unit. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=805677 Also I think connects2 makes a harness that keeps pdc alive with aftermarket head units. I have spoken to two others who did have logic 7, and they also went back to OEM due to SQ related issues. But again, these are more audiophile type people, so it may be acceptable for you, unless you too are planning a proper SQ build.
