N53 oil temperature dropping at motorway speeds
Hi all,
Since the cold weather begun, I have noticed that when doing motorway journeys my engine oil temperature does not stay to operating temperature. In normal use its fine but at motorway speeds it can drop all the way to the bottom. I know the thermostat is usually the culprit for coolant temperature gauges but this my car shoes engine oil temperature only. Also, there are no fault codes to suggest thermostat stuck open or anything like that. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be or what to look for? |

Most likely cause would be thermostat in my book. If you check the engine itself, does it feel cool to the touch?
Only other thought is maybe the oil temp sensor is on the blink? Not quite sure where that is, but it may be part of the function of the oil level sensor mounted in the sump. Have you noticed any malfunction in the oil level/condition display on the dash? My oil temp takes a lot longer to get to working temp in the cold weather, but once there, it stays.
